No extracurriculars! Can I get in?

I'm a junior in highschool and I have no extracurriculars, I have a 3.6 GPA and waiting on my ACT scores. Would not having any extracurriculars hinder my acceptance? I'm planning on doing community service this summer and through my senior year and taking community college courses my senior year also, will this help?

Relax! There are over 3,000 4-year colleges in this country, most of which admit based just on grades & scores. Its only when you’re talking about the most competitive 100 or so that you need the amazing ECs. On the other hand if you’ve convinced yourself that you can only have a satisfactory college experience if you go to a top-100 school, well, you’ve dug yourself a bit of a hole…

I suggest that you read a book about college admissions before you go any farther and start picking colleges. A good book lays out the process and, more importantly, goes into how to find a school that is a fit for you. One book I recommend is “Admission Matters”.

I don’t want to go to an ivy league school or anything, I’m hoping to go to a state school where I live, USF or FSU.

Oh yeah definitely. Don’t sweat out too much. My friend got into Emory sans extracurriculars.

…as long as your ‘community service’ is not court ordered:)

no one has zero EC…think deeply, have you volunteered at school / library / any sort of fund raising / collecting for canned food drive or winter clothes etc etc in the past?
Read books to kids via school lunch buddies program?
if not, it is not too late to start. Local library is a great place to start.

good luck !

I would try to do a little community service, or to get a job, or be a camp counselor, really anything of interest this summer. Not only because it’s nice to give back to your community (ahem probably should be primary motivation) but also cause it will give your application a little boost. But as long as you’re not aiming for a super duper elite college, you’ll still be fine.

You should aim for Harvard and watch your self-esteem crumble.

@meursalt you’ve been ridiculously immature and rude on these forums. why don’t you get over your rejections, huh?

^lol no…
