No financial aid?? No sense

To help out OP … How does he go about getting it in writing? Have them run numbers and then ask for a printout?

*she but its okay! and yeah I’d like to know that too

By sending the FA office and the Scholarship office the details of what is expected for fall 2016 based on a zero EFC and her stats and saving their written responses.

There is one scholarship listed on the NPC and it's the michigan competitive scholarship. I already got that, it showed in my aid for this year too. .
Maybe I missed this, but if that’s true, then why does your headline claim that you got no FA for this year?

and THEN, you wrote this:
got 2,887 pell grant and only 1000 unsubsidized and 1,750 subsidized. That's it,
So, either you’re making mistakes or your really didn’t get that Michigan scholarship this year. Please clarify.

Tell us EXACTLY what’s in your Spring FA pkg…every detail and amount. @reb1rr

This is what the breakdown looks like on the “stuinfo” page from the MSU web site for financial aid awards. It will show the total award package for each semester at the bottom. All of the awards showed up on the stuinfo account page regardless of whether or not they money had been disbursed and deducted from the bill that we received. The donor awards, for example, are not disbursed until the Spring semester due to the outside scholarships’ own restrictions. MSU assumes the funds will be disbursed, however, and deducts them from the bill.

I sounded dramatic, I apologize, I’m a very dramatic 18 year old girl so thats just how I speak and type. When I didn’t see those grants I thought I was getting, I freaked out because I knew my parents couldn’t take out a 7,000 dollar loan for every semester I was in college. That scholarship was only 300 for one semester so I just failed to include it in my description but it is in my spring aid.

and here is a copy of the billing statement for Fall Semester of 2015. UITION (12.00 credit(s)) $ 14,544.00

Ok…the PLUS loan isn’t aid. It’s a loan for your parents and who knows if they’ll take it or if they’ll qualify.

That pkg is NOT half of what the NPC indicated for a FALL START.

This is why you need to find out if you start in Fall 2016, will that $10,000+ merit scholarship ($5k per semester) be awarded.

In the meantime, maybe @kelsmom can tell you which Mich publics would still award you big merit and classify you as an incoming frosh with only 10 credits (no school in spring).

You need to apply to some lower tier mIch schools for merit.

Ok…but now you’re an adult and doing adult things and handling adult matters. Cut back on the drama so that you’ll be taken seriously when dealing with serious matters. When facts don’t check out, then people lose interest in helping.

I got the pell. I got the Michigan competitive. Those two grants are in question and that is what I will be speaking to them about tomorrow when I go to the office. If they can show me proof that I will be receiving that MSU student aid grant then that is the one missing link that will take it from unaffordable to affordable. I don’t know if I will get the freshman grant even though I still am a freshman. Again, I will ask them this tomorrow.

I wonder if you could get those 2 other grants for the Spring semester instead of waiting for fall if

 1. A current student receiving those grants has since dropped out this semester, freeing up more grant money

Or

 1. You explain that you may need to consider going elsewhere to college since this school is unaffordable without the grants, for 4 years, that were in the original information you received, assuming your EFC is similar all 4 years.

They said the only reason I didn’t receive them now was because they did not have any money left so those are good points. Thank you!

What are your parents saying about that Plus Loan?

That is a lot of money for a 0 EFC family. that could buy a used car.

I don’t know for sure but I don’t think my parents qualify for it. My mom isn’t a citizen (No job no license no social security number) and my dad is a working US citizen but has a not so great credit record. If they don’t qualify then I can maximize my loans. I am putting down 5000 dollars (I did have more money saved from working but I bought a laptop, paid for community college, etc so thats it). I saved a lot doing community college for one semester so taking out a few thousand for this first year is fine with me and my parents. They lent some relatives a lot of money many years ago when we were much better financially and they’ve been waiting to pay us back until I started college. We can afford something which is a lot better than nothing.

I think you need to ask MSU for more aid to enroll in the spring, or let them know you will have to wait until fall. You will be spending money that you wouldn’t have to spend, otherwise. There’s no benefit to you to enroll in the spring, while they will presumably have a few beds to fill after some of the fall enrollees drop out. It seems like you might have a little bit of leverage. If you were my daughter, I’d advise you to hang onto the money you’ve saved - and potentially save more by working full-time until next spring - until you absolutely need to spend it. If you’ve done well in your CC classes, you should also see if you can get an invitation to the Honors College. That might free up some more institutional scholarship money for you.

Copy and print what Mom2ck has written so you can specifically ask about those things.

Hopefully tomorrow you will get the financial reassurances and documentation. However if they do not give you solid answers, you have got to look at other schools that are affordable and you have a short window maybe for scholarship consideration - you may qualify for more merit/grant at another state college as an incoming freshman with the limited hours you have taken.

It is difficult to tell about students’ gender on CC, but saying ‘waitressing’ had me know you are a gal.

If your mom’s English communication skills are not good, you do the talking and she can nod, look at you for cues.

When did you submit FAFSA? They probably ran out of fund after the Fall admit. In addigion, MSU does not meet needs.
