Family income of ~ 60k per year, and the only thing I had the option of getting were the Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized loans after filing the FAFSA, I don’t want to take out loans. Was I supposed to get any grants or anything like that, maybe from the college itself too?
Which college? Yes, you would be eligible for grants if the college had any FA to give. It depends on the college.
What’s your EFC? Did you apply anywhere that meets 100% of demonstrated need?
@HRSMom : WSU
@catbird1 : my EFC is like 7040 or something around 7000 i dont know off the top of my head, i applied to 5 colleges none of them met all my needs, the highest that i got from one of them was 6.5k per year
What schools? Are they in-state or out of state?
State schools tend to have very little $ for FA unfortunately. So all a lot of kids get there is a possible pell grant and loans. Your income is too high for Pell.
I should of indicated this:
school: WSU (most likely, could be U of M if I get in there, still haven’t heard)
- In- state
U of M would meet more of your need! I hope you are accepted soon!
Did you actually file the FAFSA and send to these schools?
WSU? Wayne State? Not everybody knows Michigan college.
If it is Wayne State, they don’t have a lot of need based aid to give and it looks like you don’t quality for a PELL grant.
Can you live at home and commute?
@deb922 no
@HRSMom yeah I filed the FAFSA to all the schools I applied; U Mich doesn’t show financial aid data on the portal until AFTER you are accepted -_-
Did you run Wayne State’s Net Price Calculator ? If not, do so now to get an idea if loans are all you get.
Most state schools have little/no aid to give.
First, run the NPC for each school you applied (you should have done that before applying). If you do get accepted by UMich, they meet the needs of all in state students. Unless you have merit scholarship(s), your FA package is likely to include loans in it. But if you still have not heard back from UMich, your chance is not good. Their regular admission is rolling, but most would be announced before mid March. There are some, but not many, late admission (and from wait list) though.
@billcsho they’re highly competitive and only admit about 28% of students, I applied EA, go deferred, but they promised all decisions to be out by mid-April, whatever that means. & Yes I’ve already run NPC for my 2nd choice (WSU)
OK…? And what does WSU’s NCP say?
Also your chances of getting into U of M right now are just about zero.
Is there someone you can commute to? Eastern? Western? Oakland?
@romanigypsyeyes im not commuting im staying there, NPC for me will be around 16k per year. im not interested in going to eastern, western, or oakland they’re not much cheaper. its either U of M or WSU.
University of Michigan requires the CSS PROFILE. If you didn’t file that, your financial aid offer will only include Federal student aid and loans.
i did file it @exlibris97
For in state students, the admission rate is around 40-45%.
Good luck on getting in to U Mich. I hope it works out.
How hard is it to transfer into Michigan? If Wayne State is unaffordable, could you go to community college and transfer after a year? Maybe someone would have an idea if that is feasible.
I know that in the recent past, getting into Ohio State was harder admit as a freshman than it was to transfer if you did well in college. But I have no idea how that works at Michigan.
