Incoming senior here, I won't qualify or federal aid because my parents made 100,000 last year but my parents don't want to pay for college because claim there's multiple avenues to go without them paying (community college, army, etc) also my sister is at college already without their help so they claim it would make them look like favoritism
My GPA is too low for any academic scholarships really it'll only a 3.0 by September and my M+CR score is not stellar with a 1390. Ill only qualify for bright futures which will pay ~75% of my tuition

So i'm left to pay roughly $13,000 a year and I'm not sure whats the best way to go about this

You could borrow up to $5500 from Federal government and you could work in summer & part-time for the remaining.

Bright Futures will not pay 75% of your tuition - you’ll get about $2300/yr, and tuition at most Florida publics is about $6500. But it is a good start. How is your sister funding her school?

Can you commute to a school from your home? Can you get other scholarships from clubs or interests that you have? I tried to interest my kids in being golf caddies as there are scholarships for that, and many go unused every year. Nope. My daughter was also invited to apply for a Safety Cadet (fire, sheriff, police) scholarship in another state, and it would have paid her tuition plus given her a job at $15/hr. Nope, not interested. She looked at the military academies, and I think would have been a good fit, but she found something else before completing the process.

Look at some of the smaller public colleges. FAU has given some good merit aid to students I know (not at the top of their class).

Really? what percentage does Bright Futures pay for the FMS (2nd tier)?
Im gonna apply to all/most Florida state colleges anyway the estimate I got was for UCF which is the school that im aiming for anyway as its cheap and has a nice area

@4kidsdad
would I get a loan for the remaining ammount and pay for that using the money from the job or would I just use money directly to pay for the remaining ammount?
how hard is it to to get a job in those crowded areas?

for second tier, the amount is less than 100 per credit, I think. if so, then you would get less than 3k per year for 30 credits…and tuition/fees are over 6k…plus room, board, books, etc.

You can only borrow 5500 and that will already be in your fa pkg.

apply to some other fl schools like fiu, fau, usf to see if you’ll get merit.

The most Direct loans you can borrow for first year is $5500. Your parent could cover the remaining by Direct PLUS loans.

Are you parents willing to cosign because that is the only way you can get additional loans.

Community college.

3.0 GPA + 1360 SAT (CR+M) is good enough for a full ride at Louisiana-Monroe.

The amount for medallion BF is $77/cred, so about $2310 for 30 credits. They reset the amount every July, so it could be slightly more or less. Some of the state schools (UF, UNF) require freshmen to live on campus and have a meal plan, but some do not (FSU). I’m learning that the cost of R&B varies greatly. One of my daughters will pay about $8500, the other about $13500. That’s a crazy difference.
