I am traveling (alone) to New Orleans tomorrow for Honors Weekend, and I am trying to find an easy (and relatively quick) way to get from Louis Armstrong International to the school. Yes, I have heard about the Airport Shuttle, but I'm on a rather tight budget, to be honest, and would like to save if possible. Is there any public transportation from the airport to the school? If not, I'll still take the shuttle, but I'd definitely like to know if there are any other options besides cabs or the shuttle.

You could take the bus I think, but it is not very convenient at all. My advice would be to scrimp somewhere else and take the shuttle. Once you are at Tulane, then you have either the streetcar or the “Freret Jet” (the bus), but the airport is just not easy to get to from campus other than taxi.

My s has mentioned that oftentimes there are several students leaving the airport simultaneously, and you can frequently pile into a cab and split the cost. I believe this works if you have 3 or more people splitting the cab, but I think if it is just 2 people sharing, the cost is about the same as the shuttle. If you book the shuttle round trip in advance, you save a few dollars. I agree with fallenkemist-- probably not worth the time and hassle to try to save on the transportation to/from campus. As an aside, my older s (who attended a different school) tried the “save money- use public transportation” ride to/from the airport and his school- it took forever, involved changing from bus to rail, and the bus driver was new and didnt know the way!! Fortunately it all worked out, but he didnt do that again!

Ok-- if you are brave and adventurous, there is bus transportation to DOWNTOWN NOLA, but I dont know how close busses will get you to campus. Here-- I found this-- hope this helps and if you do try it, please report back!

NOTE: The reference to “Tulane” could mean Tulane Ave (Rte 61) and NOT the University. Be sure to double check that. It can make a big difference.

Carrollton at Tulane does indeed mean Tulane Avenue, not the university, and there is quite a distance between them. However, to add to jym’s post, once you are downtown you can connect to either the streetcar which takes you up St. Charles and deposits you at Gibson Hall, or the Freret Jet which I mentioned above and lets you off in the middle of campus, near the dorms and University Center. But I guess this is all too late anyway, you should be at Tulane by now.

I’m hoping to visit Tulane in the next few weeks for Destination Tulane. I was looking into the Feret Rte, does this seem like it would work AND be safe: e-2 from the airport to the tulane/loyola bus stop, walk ten minutes to Canal at University place then take the bus into campus? Also, do you know of any hotels that are less than $150 a night that would be easily accessible using public transportation? Kansasdemocrat-what did you think of the campus?
Thanks for any help!

kansasdemocrat is probably long gone, I guess you didn’t notice the dates on the posts.

There is no reason that bus route shouldn’t work, just a long trip I suspect. As far as hotels, you surely should be able to get deals for less than $150 that are accessible to campus, although it really depends on the dates. Look at the Best Western and Hampton Inn on St. Charles, and I think there is another hotel near them as well but I forget what it is called. They are right on the streetcar line, very convenient.

wordgirl, for their son’s graduation, our neighbors are staying at the Prytania Park hotel in the Garden district (they have stayed there in the past and really liked it).

Accommodations are quite reasonable - and if you like the funky charm of a “boutique” hotel, this would not be a bad choice. Rooms are between $89 and $99 a night at some of the booking sites.

It’s a block from the Trolley – reviews on Tripadvisor are quite good, actually.
