What are some good non-audition Musical Theater programs I can add to my list to apply to, backups are nice :)

If you go to the FAQ thread , 5th from the top of the list of threads on this page, there is then a link to the FAQ site which contains a list of schools offering MT, including non-audition schools. That would be one place to start. In looking at the list, note that even though it is not so designated, Muhlenberg is a non-audition school where you can major in theatre (BA) with an emphasis on performance and take dance and voice classes to end up with a MT curriculum. Muhlenberg has an optional audition to get talent money and most students who intend to major in theatre schedule an audition but it is not required for admission. It regularly stages musicals, has great theatre facilities, runs a MT summer stock theatre company and has a great reputation for a very high quality program within the context of a BA liberal arts college.

If you look at the big list, each school has a mark indicating if they require an audition. This is a good place to start. However, it will be important to check each schools website as well, some schools will change the audition policy and because the big list is maintained by volunteers, those changes are sometimes missed. It is also important to make sure that the non-audition program is well within your academic admit range. You can find the big list by clicking on the FAQ link at the top of the page. Looks like Michael and I cross posted with the same info. In addition to Muhlenberg, University of NH and Christopher Newport University are schools that may be less academically competitive than Muhlenberg, and do not require an audition (or at least have not in the past).

Make sure you realize that just because a school is non-audition, doesn’t make it a “back up”. It is only a “back up” if it is ALSO an academic SAFETY / SURE BET school for you. Some non-audition BA programs that are not also an academic safety are also good to have on a list but at least one should ALSO be an academic safety. One person’s safety is not another. I know some kids have had Muhlenberg as a safety but for other kids, it would not be a safety school at all. Northwestern has no audition but for many kids it is an academic reach and for some it is an academic match. It really is not as safety for anyone. Go to the big list to find some non-audition schools. You may wish to look at UNH, Rollins, Muhlenberg, Indiana, etc.

We figured this out too late in the game, and it wound up causing needless stress. Please heed the advice to apply to a couple of SAFE non-audition programs. We came late to the CC party and really weren’t aware of the astronomical odds for audition-based MT programs. The only non-audition school my son applied to was Northwestern. Things turned out well in the end, as my son got accepted to several audition programs AND Northwestern, but I have to say we sweated it for a while until we started getting the good news. Much better to have something sure in your pocket that you know you can count on!
