After putting together my college list, I’ve more than a few auditions to do, and I’d like to have a place or two to look at in case all goes wrongand I don’t get into any of my top choices. Are there any non-audition/very acceptive music schools where I can still get a quality music education? Another alternative would be programs like Tulane, where you start as a BA music major and transition to a BM/BFA program during sophomore year. I’m also looking for places with good Physics BS programs, as I think I may do a dual major.
Have you read the Double Degree Dilemma essay at the top of this forum? It might help you.
A physics BS and a music BM would be a double degree, most likely, not a dual major. And would be 5 years.
You could look at BA programs instead of BM programs, and double major. A BM will be 2/3-3/4 music classes, and a BA would be 1/3-1/3 music classes, leaving more room for other areas of study.
In a non-audition BA degree, you could talk the usual subjects of music theory, aural skills, music history and so on, continue with lessons (make sure there is a good teacher available at the school or nearby), practice, and perform in extracurriculars.
You could also major in Physics for a BS and take lessons, practice, and perform in extracurricular ensembles, orchestra etc.
There are many schools that don’t have a BM degree but have excellent music departments. I don’t know how your academics are going, but Tufts and Vassar are good examples.
For set up like Tulane you could look at St. Olaf College. There are others.
You have many options for the study of music. And it is fine to apply to schools that offer different paths and then decide in late April of senior year.
Yeah for right now models like Tulane or Columbia College Chicago are really what I’m looking for, as more than anything I just want time to decide what I want. I don’t want to go through a year of a BA and then realize I really want to do a more intense and focused music program where I can get a professional degree, and then be forced to go through a full transfer.
Oh that’s funny I was thinking of Columbia College Chicago. Glad you are considering it. Look at schools that have a conservatory/school of music/BM program and see if you can enter as a BA and move over to the BM. You can find this out by asking Have you looked at Bard, Lawrence, Oberlin, Ithaca?
Many years ago I did a dual degree in music performance and chemistry at the HarttSchool/University of Hartford. This is a good option if you want the conservatory experience. S1 and S2 both did the double major experience at Vassar and continued on to grad school successfully. As compmom said, the music level is at or close to a conservatory level at Vassar and you can double major there and do it in four years. You can make it what you want and you will have more opportunities to explore and perform than at a conservatory. Try to visit and listen to the performing groups. We heard excellent music at several schools so you will have options.
