can someone please comment on some non audition schools for MT. Need to look into these as well. thanks!
MT Minor at California State University, Northridge. You can combine with theatre BA.
I was curious about this too; what are some of you picking/picked for your non-audition safety schools? (I know they’re on ‘the big list’, but it lacks any basis for your reasoning.)
Still debating, but I have:
Temple - BA Theatre Acting (In-state rates. S loved the campus, big city opportunities, and they have a good track record of people on broadway)
& Wyoming - Odd choice I know, but newer program, BFA in MT. very unique Vertical Dance program that I’ve only ever seen at UArts, and very affordable.
My daughter is at Western Kentucky University and absolutely loves it. At WKU you audition for the BFA after the fall semester Sophmore year.
Michigan State is similar to WKU in that you audition for the BFA midway through… And I think there is an MT certificate. That program is evolving I know, but for us we put it on as the non audition safety because it’s in state, and we know two grads of the program who are doing well.
Dittos on Michigan State… MT certificate in place this year. There will be a MT minor next year & a full blown MT BFA major buy year 3 (if all goes as planned. Exciting times at MSU.
University of Kentucky has started an MT certificate program. Former Broadway folk are running the program. They even got Jonathan Groff to help with their production of Spring Awakening last year! Look into their opera program as well. It is nationally acclaimed and the voice teachers are phenomenal - several former Met stars on faculty.
Kentucky is d’s “sort-of-non-audition safety” (thanks to a past post from vvnstar!). You have to audition for the MT Certificate program and you have to audition for a Voice Minor, which we surmised looks preferable to get the most out of their program if you are interested in MT, at least from my d’s perspective (but a voice minor is not required for the MT Certificate). Kentucky has a Broadway/show choir style ensemble that looks like a lot of fun and the Music Dept. does a huge Broadway review every year. The BA Theatre program is non-audition. The room and board prices are very reasonable, they give great merit aid for good grades/test scores, and their OOS tuition is relatively low - d received a 44% tuition discount via merit aid. As a result, the drive-out price for d is comparable to in-state Texas cost. A great value for out-of-staters with good grades and a very interesting program.
Is Wichita State University Musical Theatre BFA non audition? The school came on my radar after I saw a youtube video of Stephen Kopel a very respected casting director at Carnahan Casting in NY and the Roundtable Theater. He transfered to Witchita State’s MT program his sophomore year. From looking around the program website it looks like he is very involved with the program.
University of Rhode Island has a non-audition BFA Acting, minor VP.
Muhlenberg. Auditions only required for scholarships.
There is a list pinned to the top of the MT forum called Big List of MT Programs by Type. It lists all the MT programs and breaks them down into BAs and BFAs, auditioned and non-auditioned. At the bottom are the ones that start out as BA but you need to audition into the BFA while you are a student. If you message me with your email address I can send you the most recently updated list.
