Hi,
I have a question about Carnegie Mellon and BUSTI. At the precollege programs, are the kids given help/assignments to figure out their college audition monologues? I would love to send my rising senior to one of these programs. However, I am concerned that she needs to figure out her college audition materials during next summer. Will the programs assist or assign her that task? Or do I need to keep her home so that she has time during the summer to get the monologues picked and prepared?

My daughter attend the Teen Shakespeare Intensive at Actors Movement Conservatory as I mentioned earlier in the thread. They didn’t specifically work on college monologues but she learned at least two Shakespeare monos while there. The program is just over three weeks so would leave plenty of time to search for monos the rest of the summer.
Overall the good pre college programs are going to improve your D’s skills so that her auditions are better. Also it gives your D an idea of what a conservatory program is like so she can know that is what she wants and then be able to speak to that in interviews. ( or discover that a conservatory is more than she wants. Also useful!)

UNCSA’s program is non-audition. Grades 9-12. My daughter participated last year and it was a phenomenal experience. She grew as an actor and as a person. Her experience helped her figure out what type of college program she wants.

Teachers were top-notch. Some flew in from NYC. Program director is the head of their high school.

From a parent perspective, it was incredibly well-organized, and move-in day was choreographed with military precision. Highly recommend it. It’s only 3 weeks, though. Wish it were longer.

YardleySisa, at BUSTI the kids (rising seniors) definitely get help in choosing and developing their monologues. It made a huge difference for my son. He went with a few monologues already chosen, and kept/worked on one of those but switched to a new dramatic monologue from a play suggested by one of the teaching assistants. They have the option (which I think most of them take) to do either a mock or a real audition for BU at the end of the summer; mine did a mock audition and received a lot of helpful feedback.

I’m pretty sure CMU has an analagous process, and I bet ActingDad could chime in on this.

Yes YardleySisa, at CMU, they definitely get help with audition materials. And not just the rising Seniors, the rising Juniors take the same courses. One of the classes they take is called “Audition”…that is all they do, work on their audition. My daughter came out with a few options for monologues. They also get to interview and audition for the program at the end of the 6 week intensive so that’s a great experience. They rarely accept students from those auditions but they do encourage them to come back and audition during the regular audition season.
