Noncustodial Parent Waiver

Will I be able to get a waiver?

My noncustodial parent lives in Switzerland, and I only see him once a year; he pays for my ticket to Europe. He has paid child support, but it will terminate once I turn 18 in a couple of days.

He has never taken an active part in my life and has told me he refuses to pay the "absurd prices of an American education" after I graduate high school in 2014 (Universities in Switzerland are much cheaper than in the United States. I live with my mother in U.S.). His conditions are that I attend university in Switzerland; otherwise, he will not help us financially. Will I be able to get a noncustodial parent waiver? (I'd much rather go to university here in the United States.)

No, you will not be able to get a non-custodial waiver. For institutional based aid, if the school request the income and assets of both your custodial parent. The school will not give you aid on the basis that your father refuses to pay “absurd prices of an American education”

thank you.

Most likely not. You can try, but it is unlikely.

Most state schools will require FAFSA only which means your father’s info will not be needed other than the child support paid this year. So it is possible you qualify and get financial aid based jsut on your mother’s income. But be aware that even if you come up with need, most schools don’t meet it anyways.

I have no idea what universities cost in Switzerland, but would your father be willing to pay towards an American university what he would pay towards a Swiss university?

The thing is that my story gets more complicated, so I think I’ll just have to explain it to financial aid officers and see what I get.
