New update. I contacted the College Board and explained that email to my ex was never received. My daughter even through her CSS Profile treid to send me an email yesterday and I still did not receive. They on their end tried to send themselves an email and they did not receive. So there is a glitch in their system that they are going to escalate. They will also contact NYU to advise that it was in fact their fault that my ex did not complete this portion and to see if they can take that into consideration. We will see and keep you all updated. Thanks for all of your advice.
I am a NCP. Never got the email. In fact, I did the CP’s Profile with the CP (we are friendly) and not only confirmed multiple times that my email address as NCP was entered properly on the CP’s form, but there is also a separate place to enter it after the CP’s form has been submitted, which supposedly leads to another email being sent to the NCP. It simply doesn’t work. I checked main inbox, spam, waited 48-72 hours, tried entering a different email address – nothing. Ultimately I called CollegeBoard and the rep on the phone acknowledged that the email feature does not work. She walked me through the process (it is also in the below thread).
Wow! That is crazy. If my ex was proactive in telling my daughter that he never received the email prior to the 2/20 deadline, I would have definitely contacted them. This is a serious issue as students are losing the chance to receive scholarship monies because of this glitch
Yes she was accepted to SUNY Oneonta. This is her last choice as it is the furthest of the schools
This is great news, @nancyf68.
Unfortunately, this is something your daughter should have been on top of as the February deadline approached. That being said, NYU is, as other have said, notoriously very very stingy with aid. It doesn’t sound like either NYU or Stevens will be affordable. I assume that Oneonta is? Is there still time to apply to other SUNYs?
Actually Stevens actually Stevens is cheaper than NYU and she received scholarships to cover half of the tuition for all 4 years. They are still a contender
She was on top of things with her father asking if he received the email. And request a resent three times via the College board site. He should have done his part and let her know still not received instead of assuming that his info was no longer needed. She repeatedly told him how important it was and advised him to let her know if he still did not receive
If you can pay $15k, she can afford to dorm at a SUNY if she takes the ~$5500/year federal student loan. Is Oneonta the only SUNY on her list? If all her other options are unaffordable you can see which SUNYs have rolling admissions and get a couple more apps out. The NACAC will be out and there will probably be SUNY schools on it too.
Yes. SUNY Purchase did not accept her for her major
Sorry but NYU is not going to give her aid if the forms are late. It doesn’t matter whose fault it is.
The profile opened in October. Their deadline was February. As others mentioned your ex filling out the forms does not obligate him to pay. There is not going to be my part and your part because you make more money.
Schools do not care who pays as long as the bill gets paid. It sounds as if you have a challenging non custodial parent, Which could make it more difficult. Do you really want to do this for the next 3 years?
As others mentioned NYU is not generous with aid to anyone other than HEOP students. Unfortunately, your stats do not put her in line for big merit money. The best you probably will get from them is an admit deny; academically they will admit but will not give her enough to make it affordable.
What is her intended major?

Is this as a commuter? tuition and fees are over 50K, you can afford the 25K?
EVERYTHING is cheaper than NYU LOL. Again, what is your FAFSA EFC, and what kind of ballpark income do you guess for your ex? Is FA even relevant if you can afford Stevens?
You bring up a good point, @sybbie719. You stated that he did not inform your D of not receiving any email notices until after she was accepted, and after the FA deadline. If the ex was non-proactive with this year’s FA process, do you believe that he will be cooperative during the next 3 years?
Stevens is in Hoboken. The OP says she lives in NY.
Will this student be commuting to Stevens from someplace in NY? If so…in addition to the tuition and fees, make sure you add in transportation costs to get to college…those won’t be free.
I read somewhere that there are 60 plus SUNY colleges…I find it very hard to believe this student couldn’t find some that would work. Well…I guess she found one…SUNY Oneonta.
Is that the ONLY SUNY she applied to?
Her major is music technology and production. The only SUNY school that have her major is Purchase, Oneonta and Oswego. She did not apply to Oswego as she did not want to go that far. Purchase did not accept her
Like i said NYU was her first choice but Stevens is still a contender. She applied to several other scholarships and waiting for replies to help with the remaining tuition if she should choose Stevens. Oneonta ran out of scholarship money so she received nothing from them b
Did you apply for Tap? Are you eligible for the excelsior scholarship?
You will be if your income is less than 110k.
It will cover tuition at SUNY. Deadline is July 23, 2018
You should still toss an application at Oswego, where she may get some merit money (which will be stackable). Also look at the offerings at Potsdam(Crane school of music) and Fredonia.
Don’t be afraid to look at the community colleges as they have articulation agreements; there is more than on way to get into a program
The COA at Stevens is about $67,000 a year. Tuition is $50,000 or so…so your kid got $25,000 if she got half tuition.
That leaves $42,000 left to pay…per year.
Can you really pay $42,000 a year without taking out loans? You said you needed $60,000 in aid for NYU…which means you could only pay $10,000 for NYU…
So…how can you pay $42,000 for Stevens?
Even if this kid commutes, you still need $25,000 which is more than you said you could pay for NYU.
I double checked. She received a total of 32k in scholarships and grants from Stevens. Never said I would not take loans. Of course you always aim higher when you are looking for aide so that loans are not too high. I also have a 529 fund as well.
I was just upset on how the College Board screwed up chances to see what NYU would offer. My daughter is not a genius but she is a good student.
Do you have a FAFSA EFC?
Yes
