Noncustodial Waiver

For all of those who received financial aid from Brown:

I haven’t seen/talked to/had a relationship with my father for almost nine years. He does pay child support, but because he was always late the state intervened. Child support comes out of his bank account by the state he lives in, is sent to the state I live in, then deposited in my mother’s bank account. She has had to work two jobs seventy hours a week to support my family because child support is only 2700 per year. Currently, I have no idea where he lives or how to contact him; my grandparents (on my father’s side) don’t even know where he is.

Are the chances of receiving a noncustodial waiver slim? Thanks.

That’s from the Brown website.

Since you are being supported by him, I don’t see how you can claim refusal of support. You don’t mention abuse or neglect. If you know his name and the state he lives in, there is a reasonable chance that you can find him.

Seems to me that the ONLY person who can answer this is someone who works in the financial aid office at Brown – I recommend you call the office.

You can also try posting this in the financial aid forum; there are some financial aid experts there who might help you.

My advice is to contact the fin. aid office @ brown. I went through the same thing with my father, and I contacted them. They told me to submit the non-custodial waiver. Just fill it out to the best of your ability. They cannot force you to speak to your father just for the non-custodial parent part.
