I’m a high school senior hoping to apply early decision if the cost isn’t preposterous. Im applying test optional, I have a 4.0 gpa, I will have 6 APS on my transcript and Bio 105/106 as dual enrollment. I have had pretty good grades for the most part, 3 80s,and one 65 sophmore year because i was having a really rough time but overall i have As. Ive already attended for a visit and I’m attending the select preview day as well. I just want to know if my chances are good or if there’s anymore j can do. I have pretty good extracurriculars under my belt like NHS, started a club, played 2 sports, student government, volunteer experience and more.
Work with your parents to get a FA pre read so you have a better sense of what your costs might actually be. (See post #2 in this thread for info.)
It’s great to show continued interest and if you are willing to accept any of the alternative entry options, be sure admissions is aware (like NUIN etc.) be cautious though bc if you apply ED and you are accepted to any of the programs you said you’d accept, it will be binding.
Has NEU been providing specific guidance this year on what level SAT score to submit? Last year, i believe they were explicit to not submit below their midpoint.
(And what is with them showing SAT range of 1490-1540 for admitted students on their website. Get real! CDS shows 1450-1500 for the 33% of enrolled students who submitted. And they say 33% is 827 students but there should be about 4500 students per class so % seems too high.)
I believe the admitted number will be higher than the enrolled number because not everyone who is admitted enrolls. It may be safe to assume that those students who submitted scores north of 1500 got into other selective colleges.
The CDS has 1450-1535. (1500 is the 50th percentile. I too have sometimes accidentally mistaken the 50th for the 75th at a glance.)
The last CDS with tests required, 2020-21, had 1430-1540, back when I think about a third of the class was not included (NUin and internationals). If I recall, maybe that portion not included has now increased to about half with the additional campuses, though from another angle, that data wouldn’t matter for students only aiming for Boston.
Has anyone noticed that the application requires students to choose second and third campus options? “PLEASE NOTE: You will be considered for all programs regardless of your answer.” Students cannot even indicate in the application that they are only interested in Boston - I don’t think it used to be this way? This makes me wonder whether their admission data presentation will change going forward.
Now that I just looked at the CDS, it’s interesting that the current freshman class is so lopsided for gender. 65% female, 35% male. The upper classes are more even, with 46% male/54% female overall.
Yes, S24 said that the second and third choice for campus was required.
I am surprised NEU is so lopsided for gender. I wonder why?
Ahhh. Thank you for the correction.
Our school’s scatterplot for 2023 shows a bunch of kids getting accepted with SAT below 1490 (and actually the 2 above that were WL) but I cannot tell who was TO.
The published stats show Boston campus admissions only. it does not include London, Oakland or BU In students.
That was a surprise last year. Northeastern had been about 50/50 until then.
The choices are required for ED primarily. If you get admitted to any program you say you would attend, then it will be binding. That is the exchange made for early admission… so one must be cautious and cannot assume that an Oakland admission, for instance, will be allowed to transfer as they allowed this year given the confusion over the new campuses. No matter what, all students are considered for and sometimes offered admission to an alternate entry program…. It is up to the student to accept in the end (unless it is a binding decision as per above.)
Admission data has and very likely will continue to reflect regular Fall admission to the Boston campus only. All other programs are not matriculated to Boston until they transfer in at a later date. This is just how the CDS works for all campuses that have alternative entry programs.
ED is only binding for the first choice. The second and third choice are not binding. And they still consider students for options not in their top 3.
Good to know. Thanks for clarifying that.
Frankly I’m not even sure why they ask for the choices beyond one for ED, bc it seems they have always just offered what they are going to offer to folks. They have to assume that 99%+ of folks are applying to the Boston campus.
It may be a form of data gathering to see which options students would still consider if not admitted to Boston. They need to calculate the yield for all the options. If one option is consistently not making anyone’s top three, they know to expect a lower yield.
When my son applied, we went through all the possible options that he would consider. He wanted Boston, but he would have done NUin. If offered Oakland, he would have weighed it against other schools he got into and what they were offering in terms of $.
My S24 has NEU on his list and we are planning to EA here. At one point considered this for ED 1 or Ed2 but we decided on EA for now.
I have been told that we can apply EA and if you are they defer you can convert to ED2 so if we really feel we should have ED we will do this.
If it is still available, I would do the ED financial pre-read. Last year, it was only open in the fall. That way, if you end up considering ED2, you will have an idea of what to expect in terms of aid. Even if you don’t think you would qualify, it’s worth finding out before committing to a binding decision. We were very pleasantly surprised by how generous they were (and we got virtually nothing from FAFSA or other schools).
Financial Aid estimate (pre-read) is available till October 25th:

Does anyone know when the Northeastern ED typically comes out? From last year they came on Dec 8, but idk if they release it on the same date every year?
In the past decisions have come out within a few days of the previous years, at least for ED.
Last year there was a glitch with the EA decisions though.
when do EA decisions typically come out?
No
Early action admission rates are low
But def apply early action over reg decision
