Northeastern Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

Are we optimistic that we might hear a week from today?

last year’s ed1 was released on dec 8

where did you see these statistics, particularly that the yield for Mills is substantially lower than to London?

Where do you see information on NU’s target of 750 students at NU Oakland? I am assuming you mean that would be for their 4 year program? I am not sure that we have seen what their enrollment for Oakland only (those not planning to transfer to Boston) is
please share if you have it.

That is my own term for it. While Oakland is not the best location in the Bay Area it is sort of between downtown San Francisco (for business majors) and Silicon Valley (for CS majors). A shuttle may be needed, at least to the nearest BART station.

Northeastern enrolled 500 first time students at Oakland this fall. That number consists of both NU.in and NU Global Scholars.

Northeastern also has indicated that it wants to grow the campus, through a combination of Nu.in, NU Global Scholars and those who stay on campus for all 4 years. When they took over Mills, they anticipated that the combine hold-over Mills plus new Northeastern students would total 1,000. Each year, a cohort of Mills graduates/transfers, leaving 200 to 300 students that Northeastern can add to make up for the Mills graduating/transferring students. If one recalls, Mills did not enroll any new students for the 2021-22 or 2022-23 academic years.

Northeastern now can enroll the 500 that they were able to in the 2022-2023 school year, plus approximately half of the Mills class that is leaving. Roughly 750 students.

One caveat, of course, is how many of the Northeastern Mills students will elect to stay the full four years. I doubt more than a handful.

ok but where did you get this info from?

The 500 students being enrolled in NU.in and Global Scholars was reported in the Boston Globe on Feb. 13, 2023.

NU wanting to grow the campus has been widely reported, specifically through the NU’s newspaper, the Huntington News, the Boston Globe, Cal Matters as well as the legal pleadings filed in the Mills class action.

Northeastern anticipating that a combo of new Northeastern NU.in and Global Scholars students plus hold-over Mills students would total 1,000 has been reported in Cal Matters, Feb. 17, 2022, as well as by Northeastern in their responsive declarations to the lawsuit.

Each year a cohort of hold-over Mills students leaves is based on the fact that students attend college typically for four years, hence every fifth year, a cohort leaves. Plus the Plaintiffs’ attorney plead this.

Mills did not enroll any new students for the 2021-2022 nor 2022-2023 school year (only Northeastern students enrolled for the latter). The legal proceedings, plus the large amount of press concerning this, make this pretty clear.

Northeastern has about 900 beds at the Mills campus, which are currently filled with first year students. However, quite a few students don’t live on campus. The trick for Northeastern at its Oakland campus is to figure out housing for the upperclassman. That is what they are doing now, through infrastructure proposals.

Currently, there is an application pending to rezone part of the 135 acre Mills campus to allow for residential development. There definitely is enough room to build out that site. The local councilwoman is supportive of these efforts.

I agree it will be interesting to see how many 4-year Oakland students choose to attend over time
and I do think as NU does more outreach in the west coast, they may well find more west coast students wanting a smaller LAC campus with the experiential focus. This is only their first year, I would not expect that overnight.
NU must be cautious with their enrollments of these other programs bc then the majority of these students who then transfer to Boston impact that campus and all the ends there. Clearly NU has not caught up to the super high yield from a couple of years ago in terms of housing, advising, classes, etc.

I do not envy the admissions folks who have to keep this all straight and make their best admissions guesses as to wha5 each incoming class might ultimately be.

Interesting
I’ll have to look up some of these. Feel free to post links if you have them.

Sure, here are some links:

Northeastern Oakland is a unique undertaking: a bicoastal university. There had not been a clear roadmap for the academic development of the former Mills campus. Northeastern also had to deal with an irate group of Mills alumni who claimed that they could have saved Mills as an independent women’s college, but never provided details on what they would do to achieve this. (I read that Mills faculty had not had a raise in ten years, so they were likely not satisfied with the status quo.)

Then there was the issue of getting California to approve new programs. If Northeastern didn’t offer the program in Boston they could not offer it in Oakland without CA approval, even though the programs had been offered by Mills?

It is an interesting opportunity and I trust that Northeastern will do its best to make it work.

does anyone know if northeastern counts a+ and a- as the same?

When is the earliest possible date for an EA decision?
