Worried about not fitting in love both schools but am gay but not openly.
Where are you from? Are you planning on coming out in college or not?
Regardless, both schools are going to be accepting. Northeastern will be more accepting - Boston is a young, liberal, academic city where no one will even care about your sexuality - you should be accepted at UVA, but you will probably encounter a few incidents here and there.
What else are you looking for in a college? What about financials?
Financial is the same, they both gave me the same merit money, I am torn between the city and the all American college…not sure if and when I will come out…just looking for information…visited UVA and going to Boston this soon
Gotcha! Certainly two very different college experiences - I know a gay male friend that went to UVA and was out in college but not high school - he struggled to find his group in the first semesters, especially not being in a fraternity. He really struggled with feeling out of place and considered transferring even. He joined a theatre club second semester and was able to find his type of friends - he is now out and very happy with UVA despite struggling in his first semester/year. His friends are very accepting and he currently has a boyfriend.
As an NEU student, though straight, I have found my experience to be much better - almost every friend group I have interacted with has some sort of LGBTQ+ representation and no one cares at all. Fraternity / Sorority life is also much less important at NEU - you only interact with the community when you want to. As I mentioned before, Boston is a big part of that, as students go out into the city socially often - probably the most common thing to do of students in Boston in general.
Hope that helps!
thank you so much do you think most males join fraternities at UVA…what kind of school spirit is there at Northeastern, because that is what I love about UVA
About 1/3rd of UVA is in a fraternity or sorority vs a much smaller amount at NEU - around 5%-10% or so if I remember correctly.
UVA has much more of the classic school spirit you’re looking for. NEU, while it does also have pockets of that, has most of its spirit in the pride that students have about the school and co-op - as the academic model is so different, most who attend are usually proud of that. It isn’t something that is expressed every second or at sports events (though the BU vs NU rivalry includes playful chants of “SAFETY SCHOOL” that Northeasternresponds to with “WE HAVE JOBS”) but more so in flashes of daily life.
Definitely no worries at NUE…all groups all types of people…just not sure about UVA
