I've been accepted to Northeastern's and Miami's business schools, and I'm in a dilemma. I got rejected today from Brown and UPenn (which at the same time I'm sort of happy about since I like Boston and Miami more) and now I'm trying to decide.

They're both about the same, business wise. Miami is #8 for best public business school and I think Northeastern is #13 for best private business school. I don't really care about rankings, or else I would go to Indiana U, my back up. Considering I don't know if I'm going to stick with business or not, I would like the school that is the most well-rounded.

I think I'm tilting more towards Northeastern because of it's co-op program, but because I'm not so sure, I don't think I should be basing my decision on just that. Co-op is when you take three months off to intern somewhere, and you don't pay tuition during that time.

Oh yeah, financial package from both school pretty much the same. Only about $1000 difference. Tuition and room/board about the same too.
Help?

I like a city, which Miami and Boston provides. I also like a sports scene (because of the exciting atmosphere), which again, both have. The problem is that both schools are similar, but different at the same time. I think at this point, I’ll probably be happy with either one, but just need to be convinced one way or the other, haha.

If people can give me points that make northeastern or miami stand out, that would be great. Or well thought out arguments. Such as the fact Miami got a new $50 million dollar business building just last year…

Miami of Ohio or University of Miami in Florida?

Miami (OH) is a well rated public (state) university in the middle of no place Ohio. University of Miami is a private school located in Coral Gables Florida. I have seen the Miami (OH) B-School rated quite highly, I’ve never seen Univ of Miami higher than 25th.

If the rankings are important to you, please make sure you aren’t confusing the two.

I’m not too familiar with coop programs. However, I will say that even if Northeastern isn’t charging, there are other expenses involved in interning, like housing(especially if you’re not interning in the area of your parents home, where you could potentially get free rent.) I remember I used to intern with kids from Drexel, who were in a co-op program here in la. The amount of money they were billed or charged for housing in LA was excessive compared to what they could have payed had they just come to LA and found summer housing by themselves.
But in general, all colleges are bound to have career resources where you can find internship employment. I doubt that just because you go to Northeasetern(correct me if I’m wrong) that you automatically are placed into an internship. Companies will still have to interview you and consider you for a place at their company. Any school, is bound to have resources which you can take advantage of to find an internship on your own. If not you can always browse through your local craigslist and find an internship through there.

actually Northeastern guarantees you a paid internship as part of the co-op program…neither of their undergrad business schools are in the top 20 but they are both top 50…i would go with boston for the opportunities in the northeast compared to miami

We toured both schools looking into their Music Industry majors. The two schools could not feel more different. Miami is a beautiful school if want to spend your days hanging out in a cabana in shorts. The lake it’s built around and swimming pool were packed with girls in bathing suits. This could be a great thing for many people. My son said he’d love to have a friend go here so he could come for spring break, but not what he had in mind for college. And even though you can take the monorail into the city, it does not feel like a city school.

Northeastern is an urban school with a very nice campus. But it is IN THE CITY. And the city is Boston. Could not be more different than Miami. I really suggest you go visit.

lol, sorry, oops. I got the rankings mixed up. Someone told me them, and I looked it up later and it turns out they were misinformed. And University of Miami, not the one in Ohio.

Rankings are honestly, probably the last thing on my list to worry about. I only listed them because some people like the information, or like to ask.

I visited Northeastern, and I’ll be visiting Miami in three days.

wgoldner: At this point, I really love Northeastern, and their International Business program. I think I’ll end up having the same thought as your son. It’ll be nice to have a friend at Miami so I can visit, but I don’t know if I can go to school there.
