Northeastern or UCSB

Hey, I’m stuck deciding between Northeastern and UCSB.

Northeastern:
-Got in for Economics and international affairs but thinking of changing to Business Admin
-I didn’t get any financial aid but my family can afford the school. However, my dad wants to quit his job for a job with a lower income. If I decide to go to Northeastern, he can’t quit…
-I got in for the NU in program (I have to go abroad for the first 3 month). I’m grateful that I got into the school but I’m not sure if it is a good idea to go abroad for the 3 month of freshman year.

UCSB:

  • Political Science but I want to switch to Economics
    -The campus is pretty but I’m not into parties
    -I can see myself in UCSB but I feel like Northeastern would be better for jobs.

Northeastern student who loves it here: UCSB seems like the better choice IMO.

  1. You'd force your dad to be less happy than he could be.
  2. You aren't sure or excited about NU.in.

Those are two big things, and UCSB is a fine school that won’t get in the way of getting a good job.

That said, make sure switching majors won’t be a problem at UCSB, and fit factors are important as well of course. If you’re really into co-op and Boston, there’s a case for Northeastern, but is a tough choice in my opinion.

Are you in state at UCB?

@PengsPhils

Yeah. I really like the school itself and the co-op program but I don’t want to put my dad in that situation…
I’ll decide on UCSB depending on whether I get to change the major.
Thanks for the help!

@suzyQ7 yeah I’m a instate for UCSB

Go to UCB at in state rates

UCSB all the way. Academically as strong as Northeastern and makes more sense regarding your circumstances, too.

If by this you mean can you call admissions and ask to change your major to econ, the answer is no.

In fact there are zero frosh admitted into the econ major at UCSB.

The way it works at UC, for popular majors they have a set of classes for what is called the “pre-major” work. There are required classes you must take before being admitted into the major. At UCSB the rules for Econ are on the page http://econ.ucsb.edu/undergraduate/pre-major-gpa-policy This is pretty easy compared to the ones at other Econ depts like UCLA.

You have just as much chance of getting into econ as any other frosh, including the ones that applied listing econ and have an admit letter listing their major as “pre-econ”. Having your major listed as “pre-econ” means nothing; it gives you no advantage in registering for classes, and they have to fulfill all the requirements just like you do. If it makes you feel happier you can probably have your major changed on the UCSB system to “pre-econ” but it doesn’t do anything for you.

@mikemac Yeah i know, I just forgot to put pre :stuck_out_tongue:

@LBad96 okay thanks!
