For those who don’t look kindly on Northeastern offering the NUIn option I have been following Boston University’s decision thread today here on CC. It appears that of people posting, half of those denied freshman admission are being offered guaranteed sophomore transfer. Many students are being offered the CGS January London option. None of those decisions are included in BU’s announced 22% acceptance rate.
Also, to follow up on @TomSrOfBoston, Study abroad is a fantastic thing to have on your resume. Your education will now have a global perspective. It is easier to fit in study abroad in the first semester than later when you are taking upper level classes. Combining a study abroad with NU’s Co-op will put you way ahead of students coming out of other top schools with the same degree. My husband graduated NU with a job as he was offered a position where he did Co-op. I worked for an environmental firm in Boston who every semester took on several NU Co-op students and almost always hired from that pool. It really can’t be overstated how beneficial the Co-op and study abroad experiences will be to your future. Yes, all this comes at a cost. Unfortunately many students will have to make decisions based on the price tag. But NU needs to be weighed appropriately when compared to the costs of other schools. Just landing a job immediately upon graduation put my husband $30k ahead of the equation from waiting 6 months to find a job. He also was offered a much higher intro salary because they already knew him. Believe me, we wish our daughter had been offered some merit money… But as we weigh her offers, NU will be appropriately accounted for.
My kid got waitlisted, CompSci. My stepdaughter got in via ED 2 years ago.
He had 1540 SAT, 35 ACT, 3.75UW/4.3W, 10 AP classes, all 4s and 5s with a ton of junior college classes
Oh well, only reason he applied was because of his stepsister. Backup school (sour grapes).
@ProfessorPlum168 did he visit? I feel that they are taking interest more into account now.

@suzyQ7 haha Suzi is that you? if so, you’re not supposed to read my snide comments =((
he was supposed to come out last summer with his/your mom, but he (and I) got busy and never did visit. Actually he did like the Cyber Security major at Northeastern, one of the few schools that offers that major, which is another reason he applied.
FWIW: S was accepted regular decision BU starting this fall but admitted to Northeastern IN program in the fall. I was excited about the NUin program as something different for him, and didn’t look at it as a “lesser than” admittance…until someone called it a “money grab” by the school for full pay students with less qualified scores (3.9UW 35 ACT doesn’t seem less qualified). Idk what to think of that and maybe I was interpreting the posters comment wrong. My guess is that S will still do his due diligence before making a decision between the two if he opts for either.

The hook for university was probably first gen college student and also the fact that I spent my senior year of high school sailing the world on a tall ship.
Beyond grateful to be accepted as Northeastern was one of my top choices. For all those who were not, there is definitely another university that is more suited for you!
Okay my D has a tough decision - She has been accepted to Communications major at NU via the NU.In program and also to the Newhouse school at Syracuse - also top rated for communications. Both are full pay at $71-72K so cost is not a deciding factor. She really likes both schools as pros/cons seem to balance each other out.
Any advice for my D between these two great colleges?
These are two very different places. Syracuse has a very typical college atmosphere - sports, big campus, etc. NU is the opposite - in the city, more professional orientation.
My advice is to go to the admitted student events at both schools to make a decision.
I was wondering if anyone had an opinion regarding the business schools at both Northeastern (D’amore-Mckim) and Boston University (Questrom). I was accepted into NEU with a 10k scholarship starting my sophomore year, but was given nothing at BU. Is one business school considered better than the other, or is it just a matter or preference of campus, environment, etc.?
@kiddie and @PengsPhils - absolutely agree and that is planned in - admitted students days at both Syracuse and NEU. This process is very tough - still waiting on 3 other school decisions next week as well that may change the picture again.
@stepl100 I agree with @kiddie above as each campus will have a completely different feel from each other and one should resonate more than the other. Also, don’t forget that coming out of NEU your D will have work experience through co-op and can also use money earned from co-op to help pay for tuition or other expenses. Also, your D may have a job offer from her co-op instead of having to go on a lengthy job search. NEU kids are simply more competitive in the job market because they have a resume that includes real work experience. I can tell you from having worked with kids on their co-op at my workplace, these kids do real work and the ones that take it seriously and contribute will end up with job offers. Boston is a fabulous city to start any career. Sorry, I’m a bit biased. If your D is like mine, she can spend 10 minutes on a campus and tell me whether its right for her or not. This “talent” kind of wigged me out at first as I thought she should give things more time, but she is a force that trusts her instincts and I’ve learned that this is a common trait of this female generation!
@Scrambled88 - Very helpful and yes its going to need to be her choice based on the admitted student day visits - both NEU and Syracuse Newhouse have very strong Comms courses, co-op and internship opportunities and study abroad options - can’t go wrong with either from that standpoint. Its going to come down to the feel of the place! very unscientific but agree this is often what drives today’s Generation Z.
Im in the same position as stepl100’s D and NEU’s coop and urban location won me over fairly easily, if we took this to the Syracuse people theyd make sure we realize Newhouse is in the top 3 Communication schools in the counrty (USC, NorthWestern, and Newhouse) while NorthEastern isn’t particularly know for being a Communication school. Syracuse would try to make up for a lack of coop by providing an inhouse PR Lab and unparalleled connections in NYC for summer internships and graduate placement. While the schools are so different in terms of vibe and whatnot, they both seem to at least claim your D will graduate incredibly prepared to enter the job market.
These are really tough decisions! All the parents here are trying to help guide our kids as best as possible. My son threw out a top school because he heard the food was bad! At 6’4" I guess that was important to him… We all have another stressful week or two of admissions decisions coming that may change the whole picture. I have to say that having the NEU acceptance has lowered the parental stress level in our household because we know it’s a great option that our D also likes. She has merit offers at UConn that make it attractive, but she hasn’t been there and she really wants to go back to China on a study abroad. In fact she was disappointed that the NU.In was only one semester. Her top choice is Yale-NUS in Singapore! (FYI, we are not in any way Chinese). NEU is only 25 minutes away vs Singapore is >25 hours of flying time! Also have 10 more schools left to hear from… As parents we need to tighten our seatbelts and be ready for a bumpy ride! Take what you know about your child to help guide them. Are they firm in a degree choice or likely to change? Do they grow more being outside of their comfort zone or are they better with a stable environment? What other interests can they pursue? Graphs and charts may be old fashioned but might help! It’s so different from when I typed up my application to three schools, visited each once and chose from that. Ahgggg, I dream of simpler times. It also doesn’t help that this year was crazy competitive! I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be going to college if it were me in this pool of outstanding students. We should all be very proud of them as many extremely qualified kids did not get into NEU.
