yes! in fact our estimate was higher than what i will have to pay, but recently my financial situation has changed. Maybe i could possibly appeal?

But, I’m not gonna worry too much atm since this isn’t my top choice and I’m waiting for a few more decisions for better schools.

@TomSrOfBoston

@luckyluckyduck I hope the better schools work out for you financially.

Anyone here going to do NUin for sure?

@ghftdtyd

Sorry to hear about the rejection

I do have to ask/note though that a high schooler claiming to have learned 20 programming languages may have been a red flag in addition to your GPA. At the risk of offering unsolicited advice, from a CS perspective I would recommend focusing much more on depth than breadth. Most CS majors that work at top companies for example are likely to know fewer than 15 languages, if even close to that. As an example, Google focuses nearly all of their work and code into 4-5 languages, discouraging using additional ones. The underlying skills of CS are constant regardless of language, and as you learn a few languages you can easily pick up others as needed, but typically do not pick them up simply for the sake of it.

Good luck wherever you end up!

Thank you.Could you please answer following as well if you know.

2nd Que I have:
Most colleges have asked to make selection on NMSC site by May 1, but here it says Apr 4th. I may not get results from other colleges before that date. Could you please tell if I am missing something or NE really need me to make selection on NMSC by Apr 4.

Did you apply for FA?: Yes
Honors/NMF/etc?: Accepted to Honors with an annual $16k scholarship

Decision (and if deferred EA): ACCEPTED (after being deferred from EA) super stoked!!
SAT/ACT: 34 ACT (kinda uneven scores tho so get ready: 36 Science, 36 English, 36 Reading, 26 Math oof)
GPA (UW/W + Scale Info): 3.4 UW. 4.15 W out of regular 4.00, my gpa really sucks compared to the avg so I was definitely worried about this so I’m very pleasantly surprised!!
State/Country: Florida, US
Major: International Business - Spain
Did you apply for FA?: yes but I had some issues sending in my documents so they haven’t gotten back to me on that. Also my parents make around $200k and I have full VA benefits for 3 years so I’m not going to be getting a lot of FA (I think I saw somewhere that Northeastern isn’t completely need blind so maybe this helped my app?)
Application info: Got a rec letter from my math teacher and theory of knowledge teacher and they both love me so I assume they were great. My essay was kinda wild, I wrote about being a collector and my first time getting into the research of buying and selling. I erred on the side of hoarder in the essay and wrote it the night of EA applications because I last minute decided to apply early (didn’t help because I was deferred from that tho lol). I’m in IB so all of my courses have been AP or HL since freshman year so I’ve got quite a few credits, plus I’ve been consistently taking one language to make me trilingual which I also emphasized in my application. I had about 130 community service hours at the time but I was also like 48/53 in my class rank so I’m not exactly sure what stood out to the admissions committee but I’m not complaining!

Decision (and if deferred EA): Deferred EA, accepted into N.U. Program RD
SAT/ACT (Superscore): 1330 SAT (Super Score)
GPA (UW/W + Scale Info): Does not report (predicted a 35) full IB diploma
State/Country: International
Major: Undeclared
Did you apply for FA?: No

Congratulations to those accepted!
I know the gpa is a little challenged, but what happened? NEU was in top 3 for dd…
Decision (and if deferred EA): Waitlisted, deferred EA, 1 visit
SAT/ACT (Superscore): 1560 (one sitting); Math II 800; Phys 740; AP Phys C, 4
GPA (UW/W + Scale Info): UW 3.5 and W 4. with 6Hon, 9AP, 4 IB HL
State/Country:PA
Major: Engineering, Mechanical
Did you apply for FA?: No.
Honors/NMF/etc?: NMF, FTC Robotics State State Champions, Capt. FTC & Rowing. Started non-profit for Sr. Citizens, other service…

@ghftdtyd I’m sorry for your rejection. It’s impossible to know how admissions decisions are made. Your ACT score is excellent and your GPA isn’t bad. Most colleges look at trends and you clearly trended up. Same with my DS. He had a tough freshman year, but mostly A’s from 10th-12th and had all A’s and A+ first semester of senior year. His GPA is 3.8. His ACT was a 31, so you can argue that’s low for NE which has really become so selective. Others on this thread were accepted with similar stats as my son but different majors. Comp Sci is such a competitive major. He was rejected from a couple of schools where we were sure he would be accepted. So we move forward and trust that he will pick the right school. He has some decent options. It’s disappointing to be rejected from a school you really want to attend, and we’d love to know why, but never will. I wish you the very best of luck in the future.

Seems like a very competitive pool. I would not take away from this that getting rejected/WL means that you won’t get accepted to an equally ranked or better school. Best of luck.

Is there anything out on the percentage accepted? The people with stellar stats that were rejected or waitlisted is quite remarkable.

Decision - Waitlisted
SAT - 1540
GPA - 3.86 UW / 4.76 W
10 APs
2 Varsity
NHS, CFS, P/T Job, Active Club and volunteer
State - CA
Major - Undeclared
FA - Yes

@GMineral Great stats. By all measures you should be in. You just can’t figure this stuff out. If this is your dream school, I really hope you get off the waitlist. Best of luck to you.

@tpcraigs My understanding is that applicants should receive all of their decisions, including Ivies, by April 1. An exception would be a late application to a college with rolling admissions.

Hmmm

Just for fun, I looked at the Northeastern scattergram on my kid’s HS Naviance (which shows results for the classes of 2018, 2017, and 2016). Lots of kids from the HS apply to Northeastern so there are plenty of data points. Regardless of GPA, every applicant who scored a 33 or higher on the ACT was admitted, and most who scored 32 were admitted as well. Every applicant with an SAT score in the 1500’s was admitted except one kid, who had a lowish GPA and was waitlisted with a 1500. I expect the scattergram will look a lot different when the 2019 results are entered.
