Northeastern University 2020 RD

What admission counselors have sent emails so far?

Iā€™ve been advised that we should expect many fewer acceptances than in the past to Northeastern U. The EA and ED kids who were accepted for Fall travel abroad will now require classes and housing on campus that would otherwise have been unused. Likewise this could also affect spring 2021 travel abroad.

thatā€™s not good to hear :frowning:

Sadly that is what I am expecting too. I am thinking fewer kids will be accepted/more kids will be waitlisted to see what happens. Logistically I am sure this is all a nightmare. Still ???.

As for the email, Iā€™m guessing itā€™s by whichever admissions counselor you have and would not read too much into it.

@Scholar5424 who advised you of that?

I got my letter from Elizabeth Cheron (AVP and Dean of Admissions!). I got my email at 5:09 PM, I live in MD. I donā€™t think any of this is of any significance, letā€™s just try to stay calm for the next few days!!

I just got the email update and im in MA

I honestly canā€™t tell you. I really could get in trouble. I believe it was a credible enough source to post. But I will also say I did not hear it directly. So, you can take this with a grain of salt. Or disregard. I think itā€™s obviously valid. I hate to see people disappointed when there is a rationale that was beyond anyoneā€™s control.

Elizabeth Cheron is the dean though. Was there another name in the email?

@CMH2024 Oh!! Yeah, she references Lizzie Leonard.

that really makes no sense for them to accept less kids because of the travel abroad thing. COVID 19 is said to be gone in a couple months, just look at china now. And on top of that those students were admitted into NUin for a reason, and NUin is generally much less competitive than regular admission. if thatā€™s true thatā€™s really messed up.

also the emails are definitely not sent out by admissions officers because my friend and i have the same admissions rep and he got the email and i still have not received it.

@DrSenioritis Donā€™t worry too much about it honestly, theres no way they would indicate decisions by an email like that. It definitely just goes out in waves

It does make sense, sadly, because we donā€™t know where things will be in a month or more. If they accept fewer, and have a waitlist to pull from if things radically improve, that might make the most sense to them. Honestly I donā€™t envy them right now.

All we can do is keep hoping! Very happy that the answer one way or another will be next week. ???

Chinaā€™s coronavirus response was effective but strict and is not being replicated in most other countries, therefore their success may not translate elsewhere, unfortunately. I donā€™t know which countries are on the list for the 2020 NUin program, but the virus crisis may be expected to last well into the summer in some locations, and may flare up again if initially down, therefore the safety for the NUin students attending schools abroad in the fall is up in the air.

Itā€™s already hard enough to predict what can happen just in our country (except ā€œif we donā€™t do enough soon, will be way worseā€) and whether colleges will be back to the norm in the fall. The uniquely Northeastern, relatively large-scale, study-abroad NUin program throws several more countries yet into the mix of uncertainty for the NU administrators. Itā€™s not just a matter of not sending the students abroad; it seems they actually do not have the space in Boston for all the students until the spring.

Uchicago sent out an email before their decisions were out about corona virus that sounded like it was made for students who were accepted. Way more than this email. Some applicants got it and some didnā€™t. In the end it had nothing to do with acceptances. Some people who got it were rejected and some people who didnā€™t get it got in. I didnā€™t get it and I was waitlisted. Dont worry about the email if you didnā€™t get it. It seriously means nothing and you probably havenā€™t received it due to The amount of emails sent.

Just got the email. Theyā€™re sending them out in waves Iā€™m guessing.

A few notes:

  1. This email means nothing in terms of decisions, everyone relax.
  2. While it is possible that fewer are admitted due to space issues from COVID-19, nothing has been stated about already admitted students, Fall or NU.in. I would not assume anything at this point until it's officially said by the school. September is a long way away here, and even with a timeline of recovery double that of China's everything still could be settled by September.
  3. NU.in admits do not have significantly different stats than regular admits. Anecdotally people seem to skew towards being higher GPA than test scores compared to Northeastern's median ranges, but NU.in is not inherently a lesser acceptance, only different.

I just got the email- Im from RI. They are definitely coming in waves

finally got the email
