I just requested a major change on the NU portal… economics to a combined major in business administration and communications… I’m assuming this is bad timing.
will this have an impact/do you think one would have been easier to get in vs. the other? (obviously the request will be processed after I receive the admissions decision)
I was thinking about this and didn’t want to chance it so I will just wait till after my decision to figure it out. Most likely it wont hurt since they already made their decision and just haven’t released it yet
NU in is where you go abroad first semester of college, then start at Northeastern in Boston in January. Possible decisions for RD applicants are admit, admit to NU in, waitlist, reject. The top portion of applicants are admitted to Northeastern regularly, then the next most qualified applicants who may be lacking in one area are offered a spot in NU in. a great opportunity and program if northeastern is a top school for you!
NUin is a program that students get accepted to: on the common app there is a question asking if you would like to be considered for NUin or not. Sometimes, students may say no and still get accepted into it. The NUin program is when first year students spend their first semester abroad in another country at a partner institution. Typically, there are 7-8 options, and each major as 2-3 options on which country to go to. If you get accepted through NUin, you have to go through NUin and cannot choose to start on the Boston campus. As of last night, an email was sent to those accepted during ED and EA explaining changes to the program. There are now only 3 countries available as someone earlier said in this thread, due to COVID-19 complications. Those already accepted through ED/EA, have to make their updated country decision by tomorrow at 5pm. Only those accepted ED/EA received the email, none of the RD applicants did as decisions have not been released. I hope this helps!
@redwag it’s a program where you’re sent abroad for the first semester of your freshman year, and then put on campus for the spring semester. You can be given it as your option even if you didn’t select it in the application. It’s often not quite as competitive because NU doesn’t have to put the test scores of the NUin kids into their stats.
If those 3 countries don’t pan out as September gets closer, it was also mentioned in the email to NUin accepted students (as described by someone here, I haven’t seen the email myself) that they will bring all the NUin students to Boston in September instead.
How will that affect the RD decision process? Will they have to admit fewer students under RD to save space for a possible NUin influx? Typically they do not have class or housing room for the @2000 students that do NUin until January, when January graduates leave.
They have changed some aspects of the three countries and places where the students would live and have added more residence halls/hotels to accommodate for students. However, there is a possibility that less students would be admitted through NUin!
They specifically in the email said that if an international location is not able to operate given the circumstances, NUin students would have the opportunity to participate in the “N.U.in program in Boston during the fall” as they said. They also said that either way, whether we go to our countries or begin in Boston, it would guarantee admission to the Boston campus in January 2021. Therefore, I don’t think NUin students would be taking RD spots, as they would be January admits technically. There is probably an alternate off campus option that will be in place if NUin students are unable to go to their respected countries.
That’s where I don’t know the details. What is “Nuin in Boston during the fall?” I had thought it just means they will fold the NUin students into their normal classes, and if so they will not have enough room unless RD numbers are cut down. They are technically January admits, but that works ordinarily because they’re out of the country until January.
Otherwise, does “NUin in Boston” mean they’re in Boston but taking classes only for them, separate from the rest of Northeastern student body? Would there be additional separate housing? That seems kind of bizarre, that they’re in Boston but not in NEU, but I guess these are bizarre times.
@redwag if they say you’re admitted into NUin, that’s your only option (or you can decline and not go to NU, of course). If you’re “admitted for the fall”, then you’re a regular, on-campus student.
