Northeastern VS Case Western

Hey guys, so I'm really down to the wire here on a decision. I had decided that I was going to Northeastern for Computer Science (although admitted to their undeclared program for the first semester). Case contacted me literally 24 hours ago to tell me I got off the waitlist (also for Computer Science). My father and I booked a flight to Case and left at 5AM this morning. I am now on my way home. There's no way anyone is having a crazier time of D-Day than me!!

Money isn't a consideration in this decision. However, I really want to hear the opinions of the CC community. Both are ranked similarly in CS, but Case better for most engineering and science programs. I've always wanted to go to northeastern deep down and I'm afraid that Case's very strong academic load and lack of fun party scene will leave me stressed and tired (I'm a good student, but not incredible). At this point, I feel like I'm deciding between what's "right" but boring/nerdy and what's "wrong" but what I was really ready to commit to.

I plan on submitting a deposit to one by tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for helping me out in these final hours.........!

How was your visit to Case? I’m quite sure they wouldn’t have admitted you if you couldn’t handle the work. You can find fun anywhere if you’re determined to find it! But…“I’ve always wanted to go to Northeastern deep down” says a lot! You have to have a good sit-down and weigh the pros and cons. Sorry I couldn’t help more but they both are great schools and I don’t think you can make a bad decision. Good luck!

Your brain - and heart - have been sold for a while on Northeastern, so it’s really hard to think of switching at this point. I don’t think you can go much wrong either way. Case is a great school and has a very high freshman-retention rate, so even though it has a rep for being boring or nerdy, many, many students like or love it. It’s also generally considered to be stronger in the math/sciences than Northeastern. But, I don’t think you can beat Boston as a place to go to school. Good luck!

My visit to Case went well. The campus is really nice, there is no doubt about it. And I admit I liked driving through downtown very much. I asked my tour guide to talk about the coursework and social scene and he said that he “can’t comment on the party scene, there’s a lot of fun stuff to do with friends, and that kids care very much about their coursework, especially during finals week.” Then we walked by kids playing laser tag, others hosting a carnival, and many others stuffing up the computer labs playing video games (it was very nice weather today and the beautiful grassy fields were empty. The only people I saw playing with a ball were some of the school’s police force.) So, “they care to do well” as an excuse for not having any kind of party scene seems inefficient to me.

Also, I just want to clarify that I’m not trying to pick a school based on parties, but it’s the next four years of my life and I don’t want my fun between killing myself academically to be sitting down at an XBOX.

I live an hour from Boston, ten from Cleveland… So that’s another decent factor. No friends to call home to.
