Northfield Mount Hermon - Q&A

Hey everyone, I’m reviving this thread now that decisions have come out. For accepted students to NMH, feel free to ask your questions here and I (and others) will help to answer!

What is the laptop policy and the reality of it’s use on campus

Hi Coco, I’m not sure to be honest. NMH has long been a kind of pioneer in this system called Virtual Desktop, which was popular when I was around. That could have been run on a laptop that students brought to class. I believe though that each teacher has his/her own policy regarding their use in class.

Thanks for posting about life at NMH - its really useful.

A question on academics: how much is emphasis on science vs humanities? Daughter’s current interest are in science/technology - would she fit-in fine at NMH? Though she is interested in other activities (music/drama) - so far didnt show extra interest in them but excel in acads. Heard that many students at NMH (and other prep schools) excel in other activities too - so a bit concerned if she would feel out of place. Would really appreciate if you can give an idea of composition of students in terms of their achievement in extra-curricular activities before entering the school. Thanks again.

Also a generic question to everyone about diversity at NMH. Many people say the diversity is fine - trying to get an approximate % of minority students in a batch. While this is not super important especially for DD - but I think it will give an idea (we would be categorized as visible minority). thanks.

I believe she would fit in. There is a nice mix between science and humanities students. It’s not true that all kids come in with achievements in extracurriculars. In my experience, kids who began something new when they started at NMH were very accepted and excelled just as much as people coming in with experience in it (sports, clubs, teams, etc)

I really can’t think of a better school than NMH for feeling a sense of inclusion despite one’s race. It’s really very good – and I think the administration and faculty is very sensitive to issues of diversity. Take a look at this story about a day for diversity on campus this year [Diversity Day is for Everyone | Northfield Mount Hermon](http://www.nmhschool.org/diversity-day-everyone)

A few questions for you, hope you don’t mind:

How many Asian students are there? Do they blend well with the other kids?

What are the relationships with teachers like?

What are the classes like? Lots of discussion, experimentations, etc?

What do you do for fun? Weekends?

When I was at NMH, there were a good number of students from Korea and China. They did fit in well. As for #2 and 3, I think it depends obviously on the teachers and classes… For the weekends, NMH offers trips places like malls, Boston, NYC. Then sometimes kids go to the local town, Greenfield, for dinner and a movie.

NMHStudent: My d is wait-listed, NMH sent out their infor prior to other schools so I made a phone call to NMH admissions on 03/09 to let them know that NMH is her first choice (irregardless of the outcome of her other schools decisions) my guess it is due to the FA that is necessary for her attendance. Do you know what the yield rate ws last year? or any other stats that might inform us about her chances to get out of the ‘wait pool’ as they call it. Thanks

Sorry, I don’t.

Do you know anything about revisit dates … like what they will look like or maybe ur experiences with it …

and

How are they boys dorms at NMH is it mostly singles/doubles ?? nice or not so nice … etc

anything u could think of would be appreciated a lot !

Hey!~ I have some qucik questions about NMH

What is the policy on computers?

i.e. I just simply can’t stand working on a laptop, and I only feel comfortable using a Desktop. Are Desktops allowed?

Can you tell me the start/end times of each period, sports and study hours?

How many single dorms are there, and what is the likelihood of getting one? Do you have the option to choose which type you want? Can freshman also live in a single?

Thank you!~

There aren’t many singles, However all the dorms are nice and there is not one where I wouldn’t want to live. Desktops are allowed.

I also heard there’s a daily internet usage limit. How much is this?
On that note, I am also curious about the internet speed in NMH. I find slow internet quite distracting.

I applied to NMH and got accepted. I think I will go there this year. It seemed to be a good school. Can anyone describe how the bedrooms and the beds are? What the people do in the weekends?

I am a current NMH student. If anyone also has any questions I would be happy to help however I can.

There is technically a limit on internet, however in my 2 years I have only gone over once. It was when I was sick and I was watching movies on netflix all day. You do get an email when you exceed half of your daily usage. It is really hard to go over. The internet is fast.

Kittykatmiau Congratulations on getting accepted! I hope to see you next fall! NMH is a wonderful school! It depends on the dorm. Each dorm has its own specific feel to it. Some dorms have bigger rooms. There are 4 triples on campus. Usually only 2 are used as triples. Almost every room is a double. You will have a roommate. Beds are TwinXL which means that they are longer and a little wider than a regular Twin. Weekends are really what you make of them. There are always activities to do. Games to see. There are trips to various places. It just depends on what you want to do. I hope this helps!

Hi…so I was just accepted to NMH during the rolling admissions. I’m from Brazil and they did not give me any kind of financial aid, and I didn’t actually expect it either. Pomfret gave me a scholarship and my parent really want me to go to Pomfret since they would pay 14,000 dollars less than they would pay at NMH. NMH is my first choice and I really want to enroll. Could you guys help me on getting a few arguments to show them that the difference is worth it? Or would you say it isn’t at all?

well i think pomfret is ranked a bit higher than NMH in terms of academics…so maybe you shoould try to consider pomfret…if you still dont want it then tell your prents and tell them about the NMH work program and how nice the campus is and how friendly and welcoming everyone seemed and tell them it should be your choice bc your the one going to boarding school.

Hey all. I’m from Australia and I got accepted! I’m really excited to go!
But theres one thing…

NMH seems to have a really strict policy on internet/computer usage:

They say you cant overuse the internet, nor can you play online games on it. Is this how it really is in NMH? Or are they a little more lenient on it? I have to say, as much as I’m excited about going to NMH, I don’t want to miss out on my 1-2 hours of online gaming every week! :P
