Northland College?

Anyone know anything about Northland College (WI) for someone who is extremely environmentally focused? (Not for my kids, for a friend)

S2 was interested in environmental studies so we “looked” at it last year. It’s similar to Green Mountain I would say, and would definitely be a contender for a student looking for that type of outdoorsy, environmentally aware college in a beautiful area with a nice small town for amusement plus liberal arts and small classes. I think the facilities and faculty are “better” than Green Mountain (YMMV). It does draw kids from outside the midwest which is a bonus I think. It runs about $30,000 a year if I remember correctly. It’s on the “convenient” side of Lake Superior for Chicago/Milwaukee areas. Some buildings are “old” from the original college and they have added several new buildings to the campus. It’s close to Lake Superior…maybe less than a mile. I would say it’s worth a look see if that is the environment a student is interested in. I would pick Northland over Green Mountain.

Beautiful campus, nice community of students. A great place to be for exactly the right student, and that student should be not only focused on the environment but a huge lover of the outdoors in all weather.

Oh, forgot to say…I thought the student body was “mid-west” wholesomey, crunchy, athletic, granola, dreadlocks, outdoor loving…sort of what Colorado College was like when we were “young” minus most of the drugs.

The thing any prospective student needs to know is that winters are truly long and cruel in Ashland,Wisconsin, and Ashland is a long way from – almost anywhere. The college itself is smart to have propagated its environmental focus. For the outdoorsy kid who likes winter sports and really wants that focus, it’s certainly worth considering. Ashland itself is an old industrial town. Not a lot of charm there, particularly in the cold months (October through April), but it’s friendly enough.

It’s really, really cold up there. And, btw, you can bring your long gun to school, and they have a room where you can dress your game.

A close friend of mine graduated from there in the 80s. He was from Brooklyn and loved the school. He went into business originally and now teaches 8th grade science. His wife also attended the school, also loved it, and is currently a vet. They both loved the outdoor aspect of the school and the small tight knit community.
