Northwestern Aid

Is it true Northwestern is stingy with financial aid? In terms of actually giving you the money you qualify for? I don't know how much need based aid I will qualify for but at 46000 dollars or so a year.... wow.

thanks for any info

My understanding is that Northwestern guarantees to give you the money you need to meet the difference between EFC and cost of attendance, with about 85% of that in aid other than loans. That is pretty darn good. Your EFC will probably be higher than you might like, though, so you might feel they are being stingy. However, that's the way it is at schools like Northwestern, with no merit aid. It's still an awesome thing that they meet need. Many schools do not, and that can make it as affordable as a lot of less expensive schools, depending on your financial situation.

Bottom line, they appear to be fair in awarding aid.

Haha tell that to my dad.

I don't know, I feel like I could have gotten more, but honestly, after spending a quarter here, I'm pretty glad that I spent my money here.

(That's nearly 10,000 dollars. So you know it's been pretty good :-P)

I have heard the same thing as Kelsmom. It doesn't mean that you are going to get what you think you should. That is a sticky point with most colleges; their determination of need vs yours. However, their packages seem to be competitive with other schools in their category.

I'm sure it depends - but my D received more total aid and higher scholarship from Brown, Barnard, University of Pennsylvania.
