northwestern greek life

I mean yea, but seriously, work during reading week? boo…reading week is for mentally peacing and going out.

By the way, I AM CAESAR haha.

I’m confused.

Is it really hard for south campus freshmen guys to rush fraternities?

No, but depending on your dorm, you will have to go to the fraternities for dinners to get on their radar. Allison and Willard you’ll be rushed automatically. Smaller dorms, not necessarily. And make sure to shop around.

Yeah, its harder. Both because some days you just wont want to walk up to north campus, and you may not be experienced to as much “diversity” not only in the smaller ones but bigger ones as well. Like arbs said, you might have to put in slightly more effort to get on peoples radar than say if you lived in Bobb. But I was Allison my freshman year, and now entering senior year I’ve loved Greek life and think joining my fraternity was the best decision I made at Northwestern.

Hey guys… I was wondering if Greek life in NU is predominant. I really don’t think I’ll be rushing, so, I basically wanted to know what the social scene is going to be like for the non Greeks. Does NU have a big party scene? And are majority of the students Greek?

Hi! I’m from the south where state-school rush is WAY different from Northwestern’s. A few questions:

  1. Do I need a resume? Should it include my picture?
2)Do I need letters of recommendation? How many should I send to each chapter?

Thanks so much! I don’t wanna be the girl who takes everything TOO seriously by doing it the way they do it at home!

They will tell you everything you need, but:

1) No
2) No.

You CAN do letters of rec. It varies on how it impacts each house - I’ve been told by some that it would make them “notice” you more at first, but it wouldn’t give you a free ride to membership in the least. It may mean more for other sororities than others, though.

If there is a sorority you really love and definitely want to improve your chances in, and you happen to know a woman who was in that sorority who would write you a good letter, then go ahead. But it’s definitely not required at all.

You don’t need a resume. If you have easy ways of getting letters of rec (for example, your mother has friends who were in the various houses at their own campuses), there is certainly no harm in getting them and you might as well do so, but if you can’t get it for all the houses, don’t sweat it – plenty of girls get in who didn’t have letters of rec at all.

For a girl (sophomore transfer) planning on rushing, is it better to live north or south? Does it make a difference whether I live in a big, social dorm (e.g. Bobb, Allison) or if I get stuck in a smaller one? And what’s the deal with informal recruitment - what sororities are likely to participate this year and do many girls opt for that instead of waiting for winter?

Big social dorms will be to your advantage, especially Bobb, as it’ll allow you to get into the social network of the sorority girls living there already. You’d have trouble doing informal recruitment in the fall, I think. Maybe some sorority girls can correct me, but all of the COBs during the fall were sophomores who knew people in the sorority already. The vast majority are during the winter.

On the other hand, girls get into every sorority from every dorm. It wont hurt you too much, it just may help you at some of the, well, choosier sororities if you know many people there.

How does your freshman dorm assignment help you out in the rush process? As in, how are they to know who’s in Allison and who’s in Willard, etc.

You have to fill out a short application to go through rush, so they know your dorm, major, your grades from fall quarter, club affiliations, etc.

Sorority Preview is this Sunday. Do the sororities start selecting at this stage or is it really just so the new girls can get acquainted with the houses?

I think D is planning to rush this year, and I know absolutely nothing about how it works. Can anyone post a “NU Sorority Rushing for Dummies” overview (or point me towards a relevant resource if it already exists) so mom has a clue about what’s going to happen?

@arbiter213 - perfect mom-resource. Thank you!!

Congratulations to everyone who just finished rush!!

Glad that’s over with! Phew! Now hopefully my D can find time to do her school work!!!
