Northwestern or USC?

First of all, what's up with all these threads asking whether the person should go to Northwestern or not? I haven't seen this many threads on the topic on other boards. Is it a bad sign that so many people are uncertain about choosing Northwestern?

Now, on to my question, which perpetuates the aforementioned trend.

I'm from the Midwest, and I'm interested in majoring in journalism, possibly with a broadcast concentration. I want to combine that with political science and business, if possible, as well as pre-law.

I've been accepted to both Northwestern and USC, and USC has offered me about twice the amount of scholarships/grants that Northwestern has.

I've heard about how Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism graduates are swamped with job offers upon earning their degrees. Since I live in the Midwest, most people aren't as familiar with USC's School for Communication here. Regardless, going to a school that'll give me opportunities for internships and connections is very important to me.

Knowing all of this, and knowing that I'm interested in a combination of broadcast journalism, poli sci, business, and pre-law, do you have any suggestions?

Well, a lot of people who apply to Northwestern are competitive students who also got into a number of other good schools, so obviously the choice is going to be hard. I think the fact that NU isn't as well known on the coasts as it is in the midwest is a decisive factor for some people (even though it shouldn't be).

NU doesn't haven't an undergrad business program, just a business institutions minor. Our poli sci department is great (I'm a poli sci major and I've liked all the classes I've taken so far), and Medill is, well, Medill. Medill grads do have tons of connections usually, and there are plenty of opportunities to write for the school newspaper. Plus you do TM (internships) your junior year.

If the money factor is really important to your family, I'd say go with USC. If not, spend the extra bucks and come to NU.

i made the same decision and i'm from southern CA....MEDILL'S REPUTATION CANNOT BE BEAT. if money isn't an issue, go to NU. it's really the best thing for aspiring journalists [and you seem very set on jouranlism]....

oh and another thing. poli sci, business, and pre-law are all very good depts here.

Medill gives you connections and hooks you up with job offers [as you already know]. i would choose medill. hands down.

sorry, hope that helped. pls msg me if you need more advice! good luck!
