Northwestern vs. Duke vs. Berkeley

OP, Berkeley has top programs for both English and Biology – more respected and regarded than either programs at Duke and Northwestern. And, San Francisco is a fantastic place.

San Francisco is indeed a fantastic place. But, no, unless the OP is already pursuing a PhD, there is absolutely no meaningful difference between the very high quality undergraduate programs in English and Biology at all three schools.

^ Why not? Profs that handle postgrad also handle undergrads. You’d have an early exposure to those profs then., giving you a leg up when you’ll soon apply to postgrad programs.

RML, why is it so hard to understand that undergrads are learning very basic material so as long as someone has a PhD, then they are qualified to teach English or Biology whether at Amherst, NU, or Chico State? I’ve never heard of any correlation with excellence in teaching and excellence in research-teaching style depends on the professor at hand.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to this thread!! After much deliberation, I have decided to attend Northwestern. After visiting all of the campuses and talking to students at the schools, I found that I am a better fit for both NU’s campus (and relative proximity to Chicago) and its student body. Good luck to everyone else making their college decisions!! I hope that this thread helps loads.

Hey purpledinos!

I’m in the same position right now that you were in a year ago. I was just curious as to what made you choose Northwestern and how you knew it was the right fit. I love both schools/campuses and I’m having a very difficult time deciding.
