^^^^^ right...see, this is why the debate rages on. Northwestern and Chicago groupies keep trying to make their school sound better. Whether you meant for it to be or not, that statement is fair game for more Chicago fanatics to continue arguing, since many people will consider Harvard to be better than Oxford.

Gellino has said it best:

"I would agree with you that bickering over UChicago vs Northwestern is meaningless since they are close enough academically that not choosing based on fit instead is ridiculous."

I don't think it's possible to say one school is better than the other overall. It's not like we're comparing Northwestern to BU. NU and Chicago are peers, and arguing over which is better is about as proactive as arguing over whether Princeton or Yale is a better school. (please don't start debating over that now :D)

elsijfdl
for the analogy to make sense you need to explain your standpoint on oxford/harvard. otherwise its just an arbitrary comparison...
like me saying NW : Chicago = Richard Pryor : George Carlin

listen to you, you're a mom getting in arguments and swearing at 19 year-old kids on an internet forum

LOL, elsijfdl is such an idiot. Listen to what MOMofWC has said- she speaks wisdom. Coincidentally, what MOM’s said reminds me of my uncle, who told me ruefully one day “Rabban, there are only five private universities in this country that’s worth “huge” education debt :( - Harvard Yale Princeton in the east, Chicago in the middle & Stanford in the west coast”. Basically, what MOM’s said.

NW : Chicago = fun, light weight Blues Brothers “soul man” : classic “inimitable” rock band Chicago “Saturday in the (Hyde) Park”

Rabban, with all due respect, your uncle is an idiot. The idea of attending U Chicago makes me cringe; I think I can honestly say I'd rather attend a huge state university. There are plenty of people who would say the same about Northwestern, and their opinion is just as legitimate as mine. But to say that U Chicago is a better or more worthwhile school is quite frankly retarded.

I don't know about that. I always thought UChicago had the reputation of a more serious academic environment, but it seemed to come at the expense of being less fun; so certainly wasn't for everyone.

Better in what sense, lily? If you mean academically, then yes, UChicago will be better than most huge state universities. If it were not, why would anyone even want to attend? Better for you or everyone? No, it's all about fit, so you may have a better time and be more comfortable at your huge state school. Still, I wouldn't discredit the clearly better education one can receive from Chicago or NU.

One thing is certain. UChicago is tough, not for the faint of heart.
But upon going thru the crucible, you will re-emerge refined & many doors will open for you.

elsi- Looking back at your post history, it is clear that you are very obsessed with which schools are "better" than others. Why is that? Are you afraid you made a bad transfer decision?

I doubt seriously that anything on this forum would scare away a Chicago applicant. If anything, your posts would discourage a NU applicant.

Does anyone care about undergraduate program rank? Seemingly it doesn't matter for getting into professional school where Chicago lags. It doesn't seem to matter for getting a job, as many or more more elite recruiters recruit at Chicago's peers. It doesn't seem to matter to most of the country who aren't aware of the chicago name. In the end, Chicago seems to offer very little upside unless you fit the Chicago mold perfectly, which in my opinion means an altruistic focus on academics. Personally, I prefer a little fun as well.

lol, so far the chicago crew (adults, no less) have said to "get your head out of your a$$" called people "idiots," put their school on par (TWICE!) with HYPS, and said that it is one of only five private schools in the country worth paying for

while the northwestern students (kids) have consistently encouraged people to check out both schools before making a decision

That's a rather romantic view of college academics. Life isn't that simple. There are many forms of life challenges. Academic is simply just one of them. Success in one doesn't necessarily translate to success in others. On the other hand, there are many people that party all day long in college and still become quiet successful and have happy life after college.

elsi- my kids are in college, and they got it right the first time.

Not sure what your problem is, but you are sure not the one to be accusing others of hurling insults. You better grow up or your second college won't work out either.
