Northwestern vs. UMich (Ross) vs. NYU (Stern)

I got into all three, and I'd like to go into business. Northwestern is also a top choice for me because it has a great economics program and is more prestigious than the other two. Can anyone please give me more information or personal opinions on which school I would choose, in terms of campus life, prestige, and job opportunities?

bump, please?

You might have an edge for admission to Kellogg if you graduate from NU.

FYI: the econ dept (along with couple others) at NU does have some finance/business courses:

I don't think there's significant gap in terms of prestige and job opporunities among these three. What kind of campus life do you prefer? Maybe you can tell us what your preferences are and then people can give their opinion accordingly.

I think I'd like a school with a nice campus and a good campus life, but I also like living in a big city. I think I'm going to rule out Stern because it doesn't really have a campus, and has lower rankings than Umich/Ross.

However, I'm not sure if the town of Ann Arbor has much to do...whereas Northwestern is next to Chicago, and I like the idea of being in a big city.

Also, are you sure that Northwestern and Michigan have about the same prestige? For some reason, I always thought people admired NU more, but I'm not sure.

Northwestern is not more prestigious than Michigan. And although both are more prestigious than NYU, they aren't more prestigious than Stern, which is very prestigious in its own right. In terms of professional placement, all three are excellent, although in general, you have to try harder when part of an Arts and Science college than when part of a Business school because B schools tend to be more agressive at attracting recruiters.

I would focus on fit rather than "prestige" in this case. From the sound of things, you seem to feel more at home at Northwestern.

Okay, thanks for the information!

Well, which school would you say has a better campus life? Are the students at both of these schools (NU and Mich) nice or more snobby? What about the diversity? Does the large number of students in Mich make the classes too big or impersonal? Thanks...

If you are directly admitted (prefer-admit) to Ross, I'd say go to Michigan. The business school got some very large funding recently that have not been factored into the ranking ($100M for Ross and $10M for the BBA program). You will get the full benefit of it by the time you start b-school in your sophomore year ... like a brand new state-of-the-art b-school building and substantially more funding for the faculty.

i would go to northwestern, trust me, u won't regret it, stern is great, but my friend goes there, and he says, while the stern students are definetely smart (he doesn't really even think so, but he is pretty dam bright), he said the rest of NYU is sub-par in terms of student quality, GSP has a very low caliber of students, and some of the other schools there don't have the quality

Thanks everyone. But do you think the social life is really lacking at Northwestern? I know it has great academics, but I'm just not really sure if it has a social life.

Both Michigan and Northwestern have excellent campus lives. I prefer Ann Arbor/Michigan's style, but that's a personal preference. Evanston is also great and as you know, has access to Chicago, my favorite large city in the US. In terms of class size, Michigan does indeed have larger classes, but not by the margin you would expect. Northwestern has its fair share of classes with 200+ students and 100+ students. But there is no doubt Michigan has larger classes. Overall, neither university will give you that personal touch that you would get from a LAC, but neither will give you the sort of experience you would get at a huge university like Ohio State or UT-Austin.

You should keep in mind that Ross is one of the top 2 or 3 undergraduate Business programs in the nation. Even if you are a firm believer in the USNWR ranking and truly think Northwestern is better than Michigan, there isno denying that Ross is truly a notch above when it comes to placement and reputation. And like Goblue says above, Ross has raised over $200 million in the last 2 years and the benfits of that have not yet been factored in.

One thing you should definitely do is visit both campuses and get a feel for them.

Northwestern is definitely not more prestigious than Michigan, and hardly more prestigious than NYU. It's true that Northwestern has the best econ program, but Ross and Stern are more respected in business than Northwestern is in Economics, so prestige is basically a non-issue here.

NU economics = NYU Stern
Ross isnt guaranteed so thats tougher.

and to above, i would say northwestern is more prestigious.

Go to Northwestern - you can always study business in graduate school.

Bobobobob, he is guaranteed Ross. The OP was pre-admitted. In other words, if he maintains a good GPA (over 3.0 I would imagine), he is guaranteed Ross. But even without Ross, Michigan Econ is not far below Northwestern Econ. According to leading Econ professors, Northwestern and Michigan both have top 10 undergraduate programs in Economics (Northwestern close to #5 and Michigan closer to #10). I would say the Op should look into overall quality of life and personal fit and go with that.

alex where do u get undergrad econ rankings?

Thanks, but I am a she :P
Thanks for the info, so I guess I should go depending on which school I like better for living and such. It's a really hard choice though. I've been thinking hard about it and I can't come up with an answer :( I suppose I don't really know what I'm looking for in a college.

Northwestern is definitely more prestigious than NYU. And while Ann Arbor is nice, you can't beat Evanston's proximity to Chicago. The econ dept. here is great, the campus is awesome, and people tend to be really, really smart.

MICHIGAN!

then NU
then Stern

Thanks guys, anyone have any other info on Northwestern? I'm leaning towards that right now. Thanks.
