Northwestern Waitlist

I was accepted to Georgetown and waitlisted at Northwestern. I am interested in law and politics, and in that sense Washington D.C. is in an incredible location that fits well with what I would like to do. Additionally, Georgetown has the Early Assurance Program for Georgetown Law.

However, Northwestern offers EXACTLY what I want to study, with a major in Communications Studies at the School of Communications.

My question is: should I try to fight for a spot off of the waitlist and go to Northwestern? Or is it not worth it and I should just go to Georgetown?

Any help/opinions is very much appreciated.

NU never really let’s anyone off the waitlist. If you want to send tons of emails to admissions and try, it’s worth a shot, cuz a few kids always do get in, but realistically I’d start putting deposits down at Georgetown so you don’t lose that because there’s not much hope. I’d act with the expectation that it’s not likely, so your not setting yourself up for disappointment, but if you do get called, that’s awesome!

@Heisenbergyk Thank you!

Anyone else have any other comments? bump

I will post what I posted in another thread. While NU’s yield has increased, it is still in the 40’s (percent), so they use the W/L. My son got off the W/L several years ago and I know of two students who were pulled from the W/L at my D’s school in each of the last two years. Here’s what my son did. He wrote a short note to his regional rep indicating his very strong interest in NU and briefly reminded the rep of his background, along with his strong 3rd quarter grades (don’t send if they’re not strong). A week later, he won a state level writing award and sent that, along with a sealed LOR from an internship supervisor. He was accepted from the W/L early in May. Upon reflection, he thinks the award sealed the decision for him, so if you have any new, helpful items, you should send them. It’s 30 minutes to an hour of your time, why wouldn’t you try?

And of course you’ll deposit at Georgetown, because you need a secure place to go next year, right?

I agree it’s worth a try, though I believe their yield is increasing. The latest year that Common Data Set statistics are available is 2012-13. That year they accepted 14 from their waitlist. Their yield was 56%. The previous year they also accepted 14 from the waitlist, with a yield of 45%.

I was waitlisted last year. According to my high school counsellor they hardly let anyone off waitlist in the end.

I was informed earlier today that I have been accepted off of the waitlist! Has anyone else heard back? I’m waiting for my financial aid package before I officially make my decision.

I was actually also accepted off the waitlist today! Has anyone else other than @Engineer731 been accepted? I’m curious as to how many people they actually took.

Congrats to both of you! How’d you guys get contacted? E-mail, phone? I’m still waiting on mine…

Congrats! Just out of curiosity, where did you guys commit already to attend?

Thanks to both of you!
@DoubleDigits6 An admissions officer called me. Good luck!
@kimfuge88 I had committed to the University of California, San Diego.

@Engineer731 Congrats on getting off the waitlist! Just wondering: when did the AO call? What region are you from? And what school did you get into at NU?

Hi y’all.

I got a call about 4:45 CST. I was previously enrolled at Case Western.

@pizzalover15 Thanks! I received the call yesterday, around 12pm PST. I am from Southern California and I got into McCormick.

Hey guys. I just discovered that the update button on the portal website disappeared. the only thing left now is the Wait List Reply Form. Anyone notice the same thing?

Do you guys think they are going to make calls throughout the month or did they already take everyone off two days ago?

Those who are taken off the wait list will be given some time (not that much though) to decide and if they decide otherwise, the process will continue.

Is it the ‘call’ thingie only applies to in-state ppl, or can international students receive calls as well?

Yeah, I was wondering the same. Would they call international students?

Does anyone know if they have finished the first wave of notifications to waitlist applicants yet?
