Northwestern's Medill Vs. Mizzou J-School

I am a current high school senior contemplating where to go to college. I have been an intern at my local TV studio for 4 years and am the executive producer of my schools new television studio since my junior year. I want a career as a producer (most likely television) and most of my experiance so far comes from news.

I applied to mizzou and got in to the walter williams scholar program for journalism that gives many special privledges and scholarships to its students. Mizzou is also giving me a lot of money in scholarships and I like its study abroad program. My mentor at the TV studio said that Mizzou is the better choice for a career in journalism...

However, what I am looking for in a college is close to an urban area and a medium college feel. Northwestern has been my dream college for years. Northwestern also has a great journalism program and study abroad program. It is also closer to my home, and I am very family oriented.

I dont know whether to feel like a big fish in a big pond or a member of a prestigous university. I am very luck to be conflicted about two of the best journalism schools in the country, and I guess what I am asking (on top of advice of course!) is your opinion on which school is better for journalism in general (i've found conflicting viewpoints) and which school would allow a broader range of minors (I am interested in Environmental Science and French)

Thanks!

The reason you are getting conflicting opinions is that when you are looking at two schools that many would rate 1-2 in a given field, there is really no way to objectively say that either is “better” - although that doesn’t stop some people from claiming otherwise.

If I were you, I’d choose based on feel and cost.

As far as minors, both schools are large universities with broad opportunities in both fields.

One of my Medill friends has had a long-standing career as the TV producer for the local news in (insert large city). Another one has been the long-time on-anchor talent in another large city. Medill certainly offers a lot of opportunities and overall, you’ll have a different caliber student body at NU compared to Mizzou (I went to high school in Missouri and have no problem making that pronouncement). However, Mizzou really does have an outstanding reputation as well in journalism. If the Mizzou scholarship makes a huge difference, that could probably be the deal breaker. (You haven’t gotten into NU yet, right?)

Mizzou has an excellent reputation for journalism. However, you will want to consider what kind of campus feel you want. MU has one of the largest greek systems in the country and is definitely a party school, and many students who are not in the J school don’t take academics very seriously. Mizzou gives very generous scholarships however and has a fantastic career center.

Northwestern on the other hand has a lot of prestige from its name alone, but I thought the campus felt very elite. I think it comes down to what kind of college life you want and what you can afford.

I can’t say much about Medill as I have no first hand knowledge of it. However my daughter is a Walter Williams scholar at Mizzou and so far she really loves the school. Being a WW scholar is a real plus and each one has a mentor. She has already started an internship in the field because of that relationship. The cost of Mizzou is about half that of Northwestern which is a huge factor as well. She is also very social so she really likes the big campus and the social opportunities.

Would you mind going to school in the heart of Missouri?
