Not a "traditional" chances thread.

what kind of schools have rolling admission?

how is rolling admission different from regular? [is it because they accept/reject immediately? and you don't have to wait till April 1st or whatever?]

do they only have rolling admissions? do they have rolling in addition to regular admissions process?

thanks.

also, do Boston and NYU weigh freshman year equally to the other years in high school?

the average 3.49 is unweighted, right? because if it is weighted, it would be a safe match for you.

thanks!

often, some state schools will have rolling admissions.
Umich, Umissouri, etc. also, purdue has rolling admissions.

rolling admissions is different because a borderline person, if they apply early on, will be more likely to get admitted than if they wait til near the deadline, when the adcoms have to compare a TON of apps and eliminate ppl more frequently. it just increases the chance of admission.

no.. it is rolling, but there is a deadline of jan. 1st or so, just like most other schools.. its just instead of waiting til after the deadline to start sifting thru apps like most schools do, they start as soon as they get your application.

they weigh the years equally, yes.
the average is 3.49, and according to the admission materials tehy sent me, that is "based on HS-reported GPA, and if both are provided, the GPA used to calculate class rank".. which for my hs, they use weighted GPA (cause of those slackers who take basic foods, community service, and child development and then get a 4.0!!)

Maybe think about Colgate, Middlebury, or Emory. Colgate and Middlebury aren't near big cities, but Emory has Atlanta. They would probably be match/reaches for you. And I agree about NYU and Vanderbilt being matches more than safeties.

ok.. Thanks! I hadn't really considered LAC's until I visited some colleges (Columbia in specifics) and realized that a lot of professors only cared about research and not about academics.
Colgate and Middlebury are LAC's.. what are some other LAC's that would be reach/match/safety for me?
I know swathmore is a far reach, but I have heard bad things about swat.
What about like Pomona, Amherst, Williams, Welesley (sp?), etc?

I don't think he will get into half his matches. Most people say they are top 20-25% and they're GOING to be top 13-15% but honestly, nobody jumps that High unless they really turn it up in a year. It can happen, but not very likely. Plus, your rank is going to kill you, and putting all your volunteer work the summer before you're applying to college doesn't look that great. Your clubs look alright, but all your sports show no dedication.

going back to rightwings reply to my post,

I'm sure they will see an upward trend, and in turn NOT weigh all three years equally.

also, is there a site like college board which lists colleges who have rolling admissions?

I hope they don't weigh the years equally.

I do not know of a site, although I am intrigued. Perhaps google can find a site?

baklava: You said it yourself: "unless they really turn it up in a year"..
at the end of:
1st sem. soph. year: GPA 3.32, 126/360 (Top 35%)
2nd sem. soph. year: GPA 3.36, 108/360 (Top 30%)
1st sem. jr. year: GPA 3.45, 75/360 (Top 21%)
2nd sem. jr. year: GPA 3.56, ~60/360 (Top 17%)
1st sem. sr. year: GPA 3.71, ~42/360 (Top 14%)
-- that is when apps are sent
and yes, I calculated everything, based on classes i'm taking/will be taking, grades I can realistically achieve, and the percentiles for our class.

I would think Pomona, Amherst, and Williams would all be reaches for you. Wellesley, I'm not sure about. I can't think of any other LACs that I'm familiar with at the moment, but if I think of something, I'll be sure to let you know.

Thanks!
BTW i made a mistake: Wellesley is all-female.
Amherst and Pomona are definitely reaches, I just checked their profiles.. lol
Yeah if you think of any, let me know! It would be appreciated :)

Northeastern University in Boston is probably a match for you. How about University of Rochester- should be a match/reach? I agree that your list is not balanced- too high end. Add more true matches and safeties.
