I received a letter yesterday from the Office of Financial Aid yesterday.

"Thank you for completing your financial aid application. After a careful review of the items submitted, we have determined that you are not eligible for financial aid."

I don't understand. My mother makes approx. $30,000 annually and my father is unemployed. Shouldn't I be getting at least some money?

Should I call them and ask to speak with a financial aid counselor (as the letter says)? Or is this decision permanent?

Because I definitely cannot afford to attend Rice without financial aid help.

Based on your family’s income, it surely seems that you are entitled at least some aid from Rice. I would certainly call the financial aid office. It could have been a mistake on your FAFSA, taxes, etc.

When you filed your FAFSA you were given your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Was that what you expected? I’m pretty sure mistakes are still fixable.

I’m guessing that something was missing or not received by the FA office and maybe that’s why you were denied any aid. Either that, or your unemployed father made
$75,000+ when he was working.

I’m pretty sure Rice doesn’t make students whose income is less than 80,000 take out loans. There has to be a mistake during processing, or some materials not received, or something.

You should contact the FA office and speak to a counselor.

Even if your dad made $75,000 you should be eligible for some financial aid (unless your parents have a lot of assets stashed away somewhere…) Definitely call the financial aid office and ask to speak with a counselor, and ask for a review on the grounds that your dad is unemployed!

If your parents are unemployed, uh, I mean retired, and have a million dollars in assets, then you will not get financial aid. If your dad is unemployed, but made $250K last year, I do not believe you will get financial aid.

But call up the financial aid office and ask them the story. They are there to help you.

No my father did not make $75000+ nor do we have millions of dollars in assets. :)

My EFC was 3024, which I assumed was reasonable, but the majority of people I know received an EFC of 0 when they clearly have a much higher income than I do (perhaps they lied?).

I really hope its not too late to receive financial aid!
