Some things come out in parts!!! https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/14/us/harvard-morgue-manager-human-body-parts-thefts
Ya gotta read the article! It’s mind boggling. Here’s a fun tidbit from it : “ Maclean is the owner of Kat’s Creepy Creations, a store in Peabody, Massachusetts, where she allegedly sold the stolen body parts to others, the court documents state.”
Not fun at all. Horrible. People make a huge gift of their body, thinking that it will be used for medical education and treated with respect, and instead they were sold as curiosities? This could discourage the donation of bodies for use in medical education. I know it makes me reconsider it.
It is horrible. The “fun” tidbit was just referencing a macabre piece from the article. Tongue in cheek (no pun intended). Guess an alternative word might have been less confusing.
I took a tour of a medical school anatomy lab years ago, and decided right then and there that I would never donate my body to a medical school.
This article would have def been appropriate for the “news of the odd” thread.
Health professions students are thankful for those who are willing and able to donate their body for medical education. This education gives of us a better shot at having a knowledgeable, educated, respectful of the body, medical provider.
Our medical college has a special service each year for the families of those who donate. It is done with grace and dignity and appreciation and can be a comfort for families. I remember my daughter, a health professional telling us that as grad students time was taken with them to explain the process of donation - the gift - and to treat that body as they use it with respect.
Shameful these people in the article. They should have a big price to pay.
Where is that “news of the odd” thread?
Thanks. Never saw that one.
All the people that I know who have worked with cadavers professionally are quite horrified by this story, including myself. It’s very upsetting because we treat these remains with the utmost respect and delicacy and to do otherwise is a serious breach of ethics.
We bring the hammer down even on students who joke around with human bones. I rarely even have that problem with students because they’re instructed ahead of time and warned that such behavior will not be tolerated. Just unbelievable and disgusting that a person in such a position would steal those parts to be sold as novelties.
