Why can you file married if you aren’t married?
Are you common law married? If not, why did you file as married?
You need to be married to file jointly on your tax return. Your marriage must be legally recognized in your state of residence, or if you were married in another state or country, in that place. Not all states recognize common law marriages. You should mirror that status on your FA application.
If you’re not married, I think you have to mark “single” on financial aid forms.
If you are not in a recognized marriage, you cannot file a joint return.
You need to put your actual marital status on your FAFSA . . . and if that is not how you filed your 2015 tax return, then you need to file an amended return ASAP!
