Just did!
Then this is your opportunity to choose a school that will allow you to be free from your parents’ control and influence-find something you can afford to attend ( without their help), move out, and start your adult life.
I am
But they will take out or co-sign large loans for you? Really?
How?
If your parents completed your fafsa, I can’t imagine how you would qualify for a dependency overide.
The parents have already completed the FAFSA.
Those federal loans…an addition $4000-$5000 a year would be added to the Direct Loan amount for an independent student. This would not still be enough to pay the net costs at either of the two colleges this OP is considering.
The OP would not be entitled to any other additional federally funded loans for undergrad. And being independent won’t make him eligible for private loans in his name only.
They might be eligible for a Pell grant depending on income though, right? I’m not sure how much those are.
Max Pell is about $6000 a year. That would be for a very low income family with a $0 EFC.
If the student gets a dependency override, it’s possible they could qualify for a Pell. But this would be a high bar to reach, in my opinion, for a family where the parents have already completed the FAFSA form
Understood-thank you for the clarification!
I agree that even if OP gets a dependency override, it likely won’t matter for several reasons (and OP knows this), including the fact the school does not meet full need so the extra $4k in loans won’t fully pay for school, but it would get much closer to the $22K. So, OP would still be relying on parents to take out loans.
I continue to encourage OP to identify additional options.
I would qualify because of my situation. Not a guarantee I’ll get it, but I qualify. They haven’t agreed to any loans yet.m, do they haven’t signed anything. But I definitely know I’m still eligible for dependency override. Even when I’m in college. This has been discussed a lot in my abuse victim group.
I’m a she btw, not a he.
My plan was to see if the tuition would be reduced if I get the dependency override since I don’t make much money. Which is possible. The tuition does have the potential to be lowered since my family income is not poor. So I’d expect to get a little more financial aid then what I would be getting.
Narcissists never make sense. That’s the rule of thumb. They may not even sign the loans. They may sabotage me. All I know is that I’m paying at the end of the day.
I’ve even had someone in my group tell their FA officer that their parents were holding financial aid over their head, and described the abuse, and they got an override. It’s never easy, but it’s possible.
Narcissists are a special type of evil. Which is why their abuse is so low key, and overlooked.
OP- glad you are in a support group.
Where are you at on getting the dependency override? If your parents won’t sign the loans, and the dependency override doesn’t work out or doesn’t give you enough money, what is your backup plan?
I am also concerned that the parents may sign loans for the first year but not future years, which could potentially cause some serious financial problems that would mean the OP migjt have to withdraw from the school that they started at.
I am glad your support group agrees with you, but unless they are lawyers or college financial aid experts, I would not rely upon their conclusion that you will obtain a dependency override. You need a plan B. Plan C would be good, too.
