Since we are still in the date range, maybe there is still hope for some on WL.
yayayay there will be a trader joe near nd soon! obvious chioce there haha.
Given the timing of your son’s update on his 3rd quarter grades being sent in on April 22, it’s definitely understandable how ND moving up its waitlist notifications starting on April 23rd is a concern (and perhaps a source of frustration).
Just because ND was trying to go to its waitlist earlier to give candidates a bit more time to decide doesn’t help in your particular situation, and normally they don’t go to the waitlist until after the May 1 deposits are all in.
Hopefully a second round of waitlist notifications will occur, and hopefully your son’s update will pay off. Good luck!
Thank you @GeronimoAlpaca
At this point, coming off the waitlist is unlikely to happen. The best thing you can do for your son is to move on and love the school he chose.
Absolutely and we do love the school he committed to and are looking forward to a great experience there. I was just a bit frustrated because he followed all the advice in the ND blog post and unfortunately his LOCI may simply have been too late. I guess we will never really know. Thanks for the advice @aladd9 and info everyone!
On what basis do you say it’s highly unlikely?
I heard from someone who contacted their AO that l Notre Dame reached their goal and isn’t planning on taking more people from the waitlist. The AO said they plan to close the waitlist in the coming week.
Really disappointing to me as I was deferred then waitlisted. Notre Dame was my dream school, but getting the final rejection I guess will hopefully help me move on.
I understand first hand your disappointment. We have experienced something very similar. Let me tell you that sometimes your dreams take circuitous turns. I am confident you are more than a capable student, and I truly hope you have other exciting options available. If instead of hoping for the “right decision”, you make your “decision right” as you study for the next four years, perhaps Notre Dame will be an option for you – just not as you have originally envisioned.
Thank you for your advice and support.
Scarednseniord - my daughter is in the same boat. Deferred then waitlisted.
She’ll be across the street now at SMC playing basketball. It is disappointing to feel like you are not good enough or not wanted. But you have to move on and make the most of your talents elsewhere. College is great no matter where you end up, so focus on making it great for you.
I can sympathize with you both. While I believe Notre Dame tries to do the right thing, I think the Admissions team has done a poor job stringing out more kids longer with false hopes. I have a child going through the same process (deferred REA, then waitlisted) and it has been brutal. We have another child currently attending ND.
Moreover, what was communicated to our high school vs. what actually transpired was different throughout the process. During the REA deferral period ND indicated to our counselor that much more kids were deferred vs. history, but they were anticipating taking more kids from the deferred pool than in years past. The opposite actually occurred in both absolute numbers and percentages vs. the previous two classes (data I could find).
Like others we too were informed that May 1st was a firm deadline for students to be accepted off the waitlist only to witness/read about students receiving offers before the deadline.
Our high school college counselor has heard ND has essentially filled its quota for 2025 as well. It will be interesting to see how many made it off the waitlist vs. the projection of 50-150.
The stat I found interesting is the admittances by school classification. For 2025, kids admitted from Catholic schools is now 32% (less than 2:1 vs. other the schools combined). This compares to 42% for the class of 2018 (class profile), which while lumpy has been steadily declining. This trend is not only happening at ND but other competitive catholic institutions as well.
That is concerning to me. If I was a catholic family sending/supporting children to catholic schools and had a child achieve the top 1-2% academically, while representing the embodiment of the missions established by these universities, who could not gain acceptance, I would be asking a lot of questions.
Having gone through this process twice I am really questioning the coordination between each level of the Catholic Education system and the message this says.
What about the other Catholic schools? Nova, Catholic, BC, Georgetown, all of the Loyolas, Holy Cross, Saint Louis, Dayton, Fordham, Creighton, Marquette, Providence, Gonzaga, DePaul? There are plenty of opportunities for a continued Catholic education. Notre Dame is trying to be as diverse as possible and with a new test optional world… being Catholic won’t be a big deciding factor.
St Mary’s College is an excellent school and very much a part of the Notre Dame community. Your DD should be proud to be going to such a great school. I’m a Notre Dame grad school alum and my niece graduated a couple of years ago from SMC and loved it. She participated in several ND clubs that combined ND and SMC and took some courses there as well. I should mention her sister was attending Notre Dame at the same time. The SMC niece didn’t consider Notre Dame until very late and never had an official visit. She was rejected although her stats were outstanding but she also applied to SMC and was accepted with a ton of merit aid and never looked back. She turned down UVA to go there and had a blast, graduated and just got her Masters. I have many SMC friends and several ND friends who ended up marrying SMC grads. It’s an exceptional school and I’m sure your DD will do great in all respects. Good Luck!
Oh and one more thing. SMC took all of her AP credits and she was able to graduate a year early.
I feel you. I also have a siblings attending, and it makes the process so much more stressful. I wish they communicated better. I sent in all of my locis and information requesting throughout all of the decisions, and I honestly just don’t know what else I could have done.
Also on the notre about the Catholic schools, I am also saddened by the disregard for the religion by admission. However I wanted to give some other prospective. Just remember not all Catholics attend private high school. The Catholic faith is very important to me and one of the big reasons why I applied to ND. However, I went to public high school all of my life (I know this is obviously not the case for most applicants but it can also be said many students applying from Catholic schools aren’t catholic either). I really wanted to go to ND for the Catholic education I never had the chance to receive. I feel like only accepting students from private schools (or the amount they were previously accepting was kinda absurd). Majority of students across the country do not go to private schools. Having 42% of the campus go to one feels a little off. All I can think of is the privilege it is to attend a private high school and all the opportunities public school people never get to have.
Wishing your family the best. I hope your child loves whatever school they are committed to now. It’s hard but I’m trying to move in mentally!
So quiet. Will ND send an email to mark the end of waiting?
Scarednseniord - I came back today when I saw ND closed its waitlist. You see you are like my senior. He has a sibling at ND. He applied, but he they did not let him in. I returned hoping your luck was going to be different than his. You have every right to be disappointed and you are absolutely right to feel down right now. I truly hope one day (sooner rather than later) you look back on today and say to yourself, I wouldn’t have had this wonderful adventure had I ended up going to ND. Maybe you are able to start a rewarding career or you get to find your soulmate, or you have the most supportive professor teach you at the school you end up choosing.
Our prayer for our senior has always been that he gets in and goes to the right school. We have said it would be better for him to not get into ND if that wasn’t the right place because it would have been difficult to say no to ND. When I say that prayer, I will pray the same is true for you.
I am truly sorry today did not work out for you, but I do hope you find and begin the right path for you this fall.
AMDG
Got the update this afternoon - you are so good but we are full. Good bye, ND.
Anyone else get this?
A tainted view, but probably accurate. When my twins went through for the 2022 class, I became very tainted. They have certain triggers (in a good sense) that put your application higher on the stack. My ND 22 son was late to the game. I am still surprised he got in, based on his ‘no interest’ before that point. His ND essays must have rocked them. He is doing great now with an accounting, music double major. You never quite know where this process will lead.
