Welcome Home!
Canāt figure out NDā¦You have an amazing son! big loss for ND!
I was accepted! All Glory to God!
I will post stats if anyone is ineterested.
Congrats! Quite an achievement. Would love to see your stats.
My son with 1560 SAT, 3.95 GPA, 8 AP classes (6 tests with 4 and 5s) and lots of ECs was rejected.
Enjoy your years at ND!
My daughter was deferred, sheās so sad and trying to figure out what to do now as this is her first choice by far but seems like everything is so hard this year. She is feeling compelled to ED2 somewhere because sheās worried. Need to strategize a bit over the next few days I guess. Congrats to all!
Accepted!
White middle class Catholic male from Indiana (NOT ND Legacy), large public high school, not really any hooks, 4.0 unweighted and 4.43 weighted GPA, ranked 3rd in my class out of 770, 1540 SAT (superscored, 2 sittings), didnāt really have jawdropping ECs but almost all of them were very geared towards my intended major. I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and AP Scholar w/ Distinction. I also participated in ND Pre-College for two summers and demonstrated a lot of interest so I think that helped me a lot. I think the main thing that got me in, though, is that I wrote a LOT about my faith life in my essays. Iām sorry your son didnāt get in, but he sounds more than qualified and I know he will find the place heās meant to be at!
Does anyone know when the financial aid decision is released?
Thanks for sharing nathanbrowser - you definitely deserve to get accepted! Hope you have a great four years there.
Iām getting very nervous for my son, as he has now been reject by two schools where he was on par or had higher grades and scores than the range normally accepted by the university. I think that might happen at all of his āreachā and ātargetā schools with so many schools having record number of applications and most test optional.
He was not able to take the PSAT as a junior due to COVID and I did not think much of it at the time, but seeing how he is going up against kids who were National Merit Scholars of some sort, that might put him at a disadvantage when the margins for getting in are so slim.
Thanks again for sharing your info. Have a great 4 years at Notre Dame - its a great place.
My stats sound just like nathan and I also got in. I too was worried about getting tons of rejections. Iāve been observing the process and am starting to draw conclusions: I think what Nathan and I have in common is we focused A LOT (correct me if Iām wrong, Nathan) on Notre Dame, in particular. I have a friend that focused A LOT on Harvard and he got in. My twin focused on Yale and he got in. So I think we all go in with similar stats but what set us apart was our passion for one school. Itās a risk to focus on one place but it seems to be paying off for many of us. I offer this advice for people who are younger and want to know how a middle class white male with normal extracurriculars (didnāt write a novel or start a business or conduct research) has a chanceā¦show interest.
Your son sounds very qualified and Iām sure he will find his place. Is he still waiting on other acceptances? How many other places did he apply? My daughter applied to 11 universities and has gotten 5 acceptances and just one no (ND) so far. Sheās still waiting on 4 and has to apply RD to one in Jan (they only offer ED or RD). My daughter didnāt send her test scores for any applications. We just didnāt feel like her score represented her the best compared to her.
Thatās great you got accepted and congrats to your brother! For your family we had looked into opportunities at ND in the summer for our daughter. Weāre out of state but not too far away. Unfortunately, the cost of them is just crazy and not something we could afford. The programs are very expensive and out of the reach for many families but then again so is the tuition at ND. I canāt imagine how families whose kids donāt have a ton of outside scholarships pay for that tuition. It was definitely not something my daughter wanted to go in debt for since she also plans to go to med school.
Thanks. He has applied to about 12 schools or so - all for engineering. Most of them are pretty hard to get into, so he might have to rethink and do some more via RD.
Heās bummed because he thought his SAT score would carry more weight than it has so far - like maybe deferrals instead of outright rejections. As he said, the test optional admissions benefits kids who may not have been able to take the ACT/SAT, or did poorly on them, but his ability to put together a more rigorous transcript was greatly affect by his school deciding not to offer AP classes and honors classes that he had already lined up for his junior year because the pandemic affected the ability to offer them (he had signed up for 5 APs and was only able to take one last year). So, his way to promote his application was actually through the SAT score, which, unfortunately for him, is not being emphasized the same this year as it has in the past.
I just hope he can get in to at least one of his āreachā and ātargetā schools and not just his āsafetyā schools.
I wish him all the best! The whole admissions process is such a crap shoot. We never went through this with my older daughter because she wanted to go to our alma mater and I knew sheād get in because we have such a family legacy at that school (my dad taught there for over 30yrs). Itās a great private university but my D22 doesnāt want to go there. My D22 ECs got all messed up because of covid. Since she wants to go into medicine, she had a volunteer opportunity all set up for at a childrenās hospital which got cancelled when covid hit.
The best of the best apply and want to be part of this amazing University. My son was deferred and feels honored and blessed to be thought enough of to be given a second look from Notre Dame. Congratulations to all the admits, the deferred, and even those who were denied. God has a plan for all of you.
8 kids for a #20 ranked public school in Mass which is #1 Education in the country all got REJECTED. Top 10% of their class with a 4.2 to 4.5 GPA and 1400-1550 SAT scores AP test scores 4-5 and captians of spotrts, any extra cirrculum you can imagine and PT jobs, strong essays and supliments. My daughter being one of those kids. We spent $2k to go to Indiana and show how we are committed. We have a teacher in our HS that is a alumni of ND and was a professor at ND as well and wrote highly recommendation letters as well to only 2 of the 8 students, my daughter being one of them. The kids that are getting in with less criterias. If you not Catholic or went to Catholic High School or legacy or first generation college student PERIOD. When you tour they say we are forcing relgion on you and you dont have to be catholic, also we are taking a hollistic approach. Not sure that is all true! Happy we have a lot more other choices. I can tell after this year I dont think our school will encourage any of their students to apply to ND. Best the luck to everyone!
fast typer sorry for my typos.
When you tour they say we are NOT forcing religion and will not select kids for their relgion background.
Weāre Catholic and my daughter volunteers a lot with our church, but she didnāt attend a Catholic high school. She even touched on the importance of her religion in her essay. There really is no rhyme or reason to it all. I learned a lot after reading the book Who Gets In And Why by Jeffrey Selingo.
My son is engineering. Deferred from ND, has been accepted to Texas A&M (Small merit scholarship) , Penn State, Ohio State, Colorado school of mines (large merit scholarship). If your son has not applied to some of these large state schools, please have him consider - they have much stronger engineering reputations than the ivyās or mini-ivyās. I think we get caught up in the elite prestigious low acceptance rate as proof the school is best but particularly for engineering that is not often the case. Donāt get me wrong ND would be an amazing experience (and he will keep hat in ring) but there are great programs out there at these state schools and with the exception of Michigan (also on my sonās list and an interview scheduled already), most are less expensive and some like A&M and Penn State have strong alumni connections too. Anyways, best of luck with both ND and your sonās other choices.
Got accepted REA, and I donāt know whyā¦
Test-optional ORM from Canada, no hooks I had a 84% average in grade 9 from a regular high school diploma (no AP or IB, literally just did what every other Ontario high school student does). I had great ECās, but I think what got me in must be my essays and LOR. Not legacy or anything. I am on cloud nine. Itās truly a whack process, but Iām so happy I did get inā¦
