I am applying for transfer to notre dame. I was wondering what the rank of notre dame economics is? It is prestigious? What about political science?

i know political science is supposed to be pretty remarkable at ND and I've never heard a bad thing about economics. those are both popular majors.

My roommate was an economics major and spoke very highly about the department and also landed a solid job.

Economics at Notre Dame is a mixed bag. Recently, I think about 7 years ago, the Economics department was added onto (mostly because of many old professors who just had tenure and weren't producing research) with the department of Economics and Econometrics. The department is getting much better, placing students in Northwestern and Yale phD programs this year. The major is becoming a lot more math-based, which, to me, makes it far more relevant and will lead to higher rankings on many of the economics rankings for graduates. As of right now, Notre Dame is rated fairly low compared to many other Notre Dame departments. This past year, Notre Dame hired Bill Evans from Maryland, who is the editor of the top labor economics journal in the country and carries a lot of weight in economics academia.

Now for my biases: If you are looking to really learn what Economics is about and how to produce research and succeed in the real world, take ALL (maybe one with Leahy) classes with the Econ & Econometrics department professors. My experience with them is that they are more difficult, but you learn far far more with them because they are still active doing research. Many of the classes taught by the Economics and Policy Studies segment you can learn by reading the newspaper once a week.

thanks a lot citric acid, your post was very helpful
