Hello! If I am accepted to Notre Dame and decide to attend I am planning on double majoring in english and math. I was just wondering if any Notre Dame english majors can talk about the program, what they like, dislike, etc. I know everyone says not to major in English, but it is something I am passionate about and I am thinking about going into publishing. Anyway, general comments about the strength of this department would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I’m also an ND hopeful for the coming Fall I’m applying as an English major as well. I agree with you about majoring in something you’re passionate about - I honestly can’t see myself majoring in anything else.

I’m not a current student, but my aunt attended Notre Dame and majored in English. I think she really loved the department and she is currently a successful English professor.

Here’s a video I found on the English Department’s website. I think you’ll find it interesting because it’s about another English and Math double major:

[Careers & Internships // Department of English // University of Notre Dame](http://english.nd.edu/undergraduate/careers-and-internships/)

Just copy and paste it into your web browser I’m not savvy enough to know how to post a link. Anyway, I hope that at least helped you a little bit. Also, if you have any interest in Irish literature, Notre Dame seems to be really top-notch for that (they even teach the Irish language). That’s part of the reason I’ve been really enthusiastic about Notre Dame: I have a particular interest in Irish literature within the study of English because I love James Joyce. Still, I too have been wondering about the quality of the English department/ It’s not as well known as Notre Dame’s business and architecture programs. So hopefully a current student can give some insight here as well.

Hi!

I’m a sophomore English and French major at ND with a minor in Education, Schooling, and Society!

I definitely think the best way to find our more about the English major at ND is to poke around on the website. The thing I like about our program is it’s pretty customizable- there are different requirements regarding genre, time period, and country but other than that you take whatever classes you want. The only required class is “Intro to Literary Studies.” If you are really set on English you can take it second semester of Freshman year. So far I’ve taken Intro and a class on India’s Literature. I am currently taking a class called “Thinking with Abbey’s” (its all about Downton Abbey and similar literature) and a fiction writing class.

You’ll find that most people who study English also have another major and/or minor. So keep your eyes out for others majors or programs you are interested in. Also there is a major called “The Program of Liberal Studies” that you might want to look at. It it a Great Books course, so you’ll read all the important works of philosophy, theology, literature, ect. Some people prefer it to English, but it isn’t very customizable (you have to take a lot of required classes), so I went with English instead.

If you have an more specific questions, feel free to ask!

Cheerios89 thanks for the link, it’s nice seeing other people majoring in math and english :)

Thank you so much Ballerinawriter, from what I’ve seen on the website the requirements seem like they would give students a very strong grounding in literature, but it’s good to know that the major is so customizable. Also, a little off topic, but judging by your user name I’m assuming you dance or have danced and I was wondering if you were in any dance groups or clubs or anything at Notre Dame. I’m really into ballet and I was wondering about my ability to keep up with it at least a little bit at Notre Dame.

Yes, I am involved in dance on campus! I’m a member of the Dance Company of Notre Dame! It’s a student run company and we put on a recital every semester of student choreographed work. It’s a nice group because you can pick which dances you want to be in, so it you can find some way to keep dance in your schedule no matter how busy you are. TransPose is the other dance company. They have more of a focus on modern dance and they have their performances in unique locations on campus (academic buildings, art studios, ect). There are also dance classes at St Mary’s which some girls participate it, it’s a little difficult since you have to take a bus to get there, but I know lots of people who do it. ND Rec Sports also offers dance classes taught by a former professional ballerina.

If you guys have any other dance/english/whatever questions- let me know :)
