@therealonessa Thank you. I am not sure, though, whether Notre Dame institutional merit aid would replace loans and work-study first, before need-based scholarships. My understanding was that this is the case for external merit scholarships but not for institutional merit aid, as defined by Notre Dame. The important point therefore, I believe, is to thoroughly review the FAN, once available, as different scenarios will play out in different ways, as @northwesty has correctly illustrated above.
@MagnoliaMom My son received Merit flight info this week. We are prepping him for the interview.
@“one+two” and @hpcsa - My experience with the FA office was very positive. The original offer was a little lower than expected based on my EFC. I made an appointment with FA and they were very willing to work with us. I am not sure about stacking. They did say any outside scholarships do not impact ND aid. They first go to reducing the student’s unpaid expenses, not their aide. My suggestion, before making a final decision, speak with the FA office. ND has a different approach from other schools, in my limited experience.
Thanks @usma87 . He got the FA offer on Friday and it was spot on for the NPC/EFC. I still have a few questions though for planning for subsequent years and am going to either call the FA office, have S call or have him speak to someone when he’s there for the Reilly weekend. Looking hopeful, although he still has to hear from 2 other schools and visit ND before making a final decision.
@“one+two” - you are welcome. I have variable income, so I had a similar question. The answer from FA was unless there is a significant change in circumstances, the aid year-to-year would not change. Not sure if that helps.
I would still apply for both. You dont know the amount of merit based aid you will receive…if it’s a partial and you still have room, you may receive some need based aid. Also in future years for summer abroad grants are provided through the FA office. My experience ND is not at all generous but expect a letter every year with a tuition and room and board increase. I had a 2017 grad and a current sophomore so I’ve been at this for 6 years now. ND offered small grant to child 1 but took that away when an external scholarship came thru…did not receive any assistance from ND for remaining 3 years…Child 2 was only offered student loans…lucky for him he also received external scholarship. Kids were offered need based aid from Northwestern and Yale…but ND was their #1…so fortunately it worked out…but I wouldn’t count on much
My experience with ND financial aid was different than @gpnnynd89. They offered more than any other school, including an ivy. Hopefully it all works out for everyone who wants to attend.
Does anyone know when we hear back with scholarship decisions?
@JustLetMeInPlz we were wondering the same thing . We had heard the scholarship decisions would be announced today, but not sure how or when.
My son just got his email this morning!!!
