Hey guys, so I am a prospective student looking to eventually go to medical school but I also have a curiosity with business (management consulting specifically). I’ve heard that at Notre Dame, you can do a Science-Business major (but aren’t a Mendoza student) or can apply straight to Mendoza Business School from high school and then use the business electives to stay on the pre-med track. Which idea seems to be better? And is it too hard to do both at Notre Dame? Lastly, what is the academic atmosphere at ND like? Cutthroat or collaborative? Thanks everyone!
Take this comment with a grain of salt, because I don’t attend ND, or any college for that matter. I can’t answer your entire question, but you’ve been waiting a day, so I figure I’ll help out as much as I can. Mendoza is an extremely competitive school. I don’t know your stats, but I can almost guarantee that many qualified students don’t get accepted to Mendoza because of their strict admissions policy (550 students per year). If you are rejected from Mendoza, you can be accepted to ND, but will just have to adjust change your major. It may or may not be easier to just apply to the medical school – I’m not planning on pursuing medicine, and like I said, I don’t go there (yet --hopefully!)
Also, from reading on College Confidential, Notre Dame has a very collaborative and helpful spirit to the school. Not like Wharton (UPenn), which seems to be a very cutthroat school, also from what I read.
Hopefully I could help you out a little bit, and maybe a student could correct me if I’m wrong on some things, or just add to what I already said. Best of luck!
Thanks IvyHopeful98, I appreciate the comment. I know Mendoza is extremely competitive to get into so hopefully it works out. I’m just not sure if it’s the best idea to apply to the business school if I want to do medicine but have an interest in management, but any other opinions are welcomed!
Interested in the same. Hope someone with first hand knowledge will answer. In the meantime I did find a couple of programs on the ND website that should work:
http://science.nd.edu/undergraduate/majors/collegiate-sequence/
http://mendoza.nd.edu/programs/mba-programs/dual-mba-degrees/
Having had a daughter graduate from ND and go on to Medical school, who also did two majors (in two different colleges) I can tell you that doing so is very difficult. She never took less than 21 hours (and this was along with coming in with 43 AP credit hours). So to do two majors in pre-med and business would be pretty tough.
It is possible, as you know, to major in business and then go on to medical school, although from my experience there doesn’t seem to be too many that do that. Usually, the undergrad degree of choice after a traditional science or pre-med is to major in an arts and letters track-think philosophy, psychology etc. Not sure how a business undergrad would be looked at by med schools.
To answer your last question, ND is highly collaborative and just not cut-throat.
Best of luck!
Could I pm you? I have some questions about ND premed that I would love to have answered by someone like you who actually had a daughter there. Thanks!
Absolutely! PM me. I’d be happy to help!
