Notre Dame vs. Indiana University

Acceptance to both Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business, or full-ride to IU Kelley School of Business…thoughts on environment and education?

Are your parents willing to pay for ND? That would be very hard I think to turn down the Kelley full ride.

Kelley is well-known and prestigious, so the full-ride should be the draw here. The exception? If your family is wealthy and can easily afford ND, AND if you are drawn to ND because of its brand name, its ranking, its prestige, then, sure, go there if you like.

But if money is at all an issue, I do not know how one turns down IU Kelley, one of the top business schools in the country.

If you were awarded a full ride to IU-Kelley, then you were also admitted to the Hutton Honors College & most likely will be accepted into Business Honors when eligible. Hard to imagine why you would turn down this great opportunity at IU-Kelley.

My son is in Mendoza and really loving it. At decision time, if he had gotten anywhere near full-tuition to Foster at UW, he would be there instead.

Kelley, and save your money.

My H and S went to Mendoza but a full ride to Kelley is hard to walk away from unless your parents truly have an unlimited budget.

@Magnetron: Does Foster at UW even offer scholarships or merit money ? Also, the long time Dean at Foster is retiring.

A few of the high-stats kids got significant merit scholarships from UW. My youngest was offered only a token amount.

A full ride to Kelley is an excellent offer. S2 probably would have applied if he had not gotten in to ND REA.

Thoughts on environment, since you aren’t getting those: Both are beautiful, in different ways. ND is quite a bit colder. ND will have strong Catholic presence, and probably still has the strict rules about things like opposite sex overnight guests. I would guess that the culture at ND is a little more academic focused. But again, you will get a great education at IU Kelley and the students there in the biz school will for the most part be quite focused as well.

Notre Dame is excellent, and Mendoza is very respected, but IU is a very good university in its own right, and Kelly is as well regarded as Mendoza. If the cost difference between the two is $200k over four years, save the money and go to Kelly. Invest those $200k wisely, from now. Come retirement, you will be a rich person!

Full ride. Take it. You’ll be going to graduate school. You can pay then. Maybe even go to ND then.

@01anna01
Check it IS a full ride (tuition, fees, room board) and not full tuition.
What did the NPC state from ND? Have you received your FA package from them? ND meets full need - one shouldn’t assume the choice is Kelley full ride v. ND full pay.
If the difference is Kelley full ride v. ND 5k it’s definitely worth debating, for instance.
Also, if you’ve heard back from ND already it’d mean you committed ED and thus committed to attend.

@MYOS11634 I belive ND doesn’t have ED, just REA. OP is not obligated to attend.

@MYOS1634, ND has REA, not ED.

Yes, sorry  Thanks. Op hasn’t returned though, and hasn’t specified whether we’re talking full pay v. Full ride (in which case the choice is easy) or some cost v. full ride (in which case a discussion makes sense).
