Notre Dame vs. UVA ADIVCE PLEASE!!!!

The price isn't really an issue because i got $36,000 from Notre dame and $32,000 from UVA (i'm from out of state -NY) so UVA is only slightly less.
Which has the better name nationally and internationally?
What I don't like about Notre Dame is that i need to take a plane there and that it's so strict but i feel like since it's a private school i'll have a better education. What i don't like about UVA is that Greek life plays such a central role in college life.

Aside from that I love both schools so i'm pretty much torn in between. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Actually, I was reading a thread earlier today to help me decide between my own (UPenn vs. Notre Dame) dilemma — I decided to attend ND so long as my FA package is reasonable — and, what do you know, the topic of discussion was UVa vs. ND:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/168271-how-nds-prestige-2.html

To quote from one of the posts:

If its very important for you to be close to home since you mentioned the plane ride, then maybe you should choose UVA. But keep in mind that the Virginia legislature is making cuts to its budget and UVA is at the mercy of the state legislature, whereas ND is not. Best of Luck.

Facing the same decision this year (for fall 2013)!!
What did you decide and are you happy?? Hope so!
Thanks.

I am also in the same boat and have my school choice narrowed down between UVA and Notre Dame. I am literally 50/50 at this point. I feel as if ND has a slight edge on prestige and alumni network, but the rules and location is a bit of a turnoff. I feel as if the work hard play hard lifestyle resonates more at UVA more so than ND which is big for me. In addition, UVA’s location is a big bonus for me as I enjoy playing golf. Despite this, I do like how ND is private and there is more flexibility in terms of choosing major/transferring in schools.

If anyone has any insights to help me make a decision that would be awesome. I am revisiting each school in the next 2 weeks.

I’m also in the same position, and after doing extensive research, I’m still pretty torn between the two of them. Both universities put a huge emphasis on tradition, which I love, and both have a great reputation. I heard that UND has an amazing alumni network, so perhaps it might be the better option when thinking about careers. Yet, UVA is definitely better when it comes to the ‘play hard’ scene, and the location is better. Charlottseville is apparently a great college town, and Notre Dame doesn’t have that. Right now, I feel like I could flip a coin and be fine with the decision.

@ScienceGuy12, if you could tell me what you like about each school when you visit them that would be great. (I’m international so I don’t really have the opportunity to visit them right now…)
Thanks in advance

Hey guys! I’m a current high school senior as well so I just thought I would chime in here with my thoughts. I have looked at both schools, but I have already decided to attend Notre Dame this fall. (So keep in mind that this might be a little biased but I will try to keep it as objective as possible). Like someone had mentioned, the tradition at both of these schools is undeniably strong. However, one of the things that I really liked about Notre Dame was that people seem to embrace this tradition a lot more. I feel like people at ND have so much school pride, and I really appreciated the “Notre Dame family” atmosphere that was present on their campus. I never did an overnight stay at UVA so I can’t speak much to their party/ “play hard” lifestyle but what I can say is that after staying on the ND campus for a weekend I know that this lifestyle is definitely present at Notre Dame as well. It’s impossible for me to compare the two but just know that they both have a work hard/play hard kind of mentality. I can also definitely agree that South Bend is not the greatest college town so if that is something you are looking for then ND might not be the place for you.
ScienceGuy12 - I don’t know how much golf you play or your skill level, but if you didn’t know, ND does have a course on campus and another just a block away.
Whatever you choose, they are both fantastic schools and will no doubt prepare you for a great future. To be honest, if I liked both schools evenly like it sounds you guys do, I would let this decision come down to cost because you will definitely have a great experience no matter what you choose.

My D chose ND over UVA last year. Tough decision since both are great schools.

She also did not want Greek life or dressing up for football games or a party school. I think she would have done well at UVA but the spirit at ND is unbelievable.

Her classes are small and she loves the professors. She is always doing some sport or going to a concert. The dorms sponsor their own charity events and formals.

Here is something that we did not expect – whenever any of us in the family wear ND gear, we are stopped. The guy at my bank high-fived me when I was setting up her bank account. I have an ND decal on my car and someone honked at me at stoplight the other day. I rolled down my window worried I had a flat tire or something and the other driver yelled “Go Irish!” She interviewed recently for a summer job and the manager wanted to hear about the school. The name seems to open doors.

The biggest negative of ND is location. It’s an 11 hr drive for us. My D has taken coach bus (sponsored by local ND club) and Amtrak. Flights are easier but expensive. It’s also cold, but I’m sure you’ve heard that. Lots of snow this year and some rain/hail.

Good luck!
