Notre Dame vs. Vanderbilt (HELP!)

I know there are a couple of similar posts but I couldn’t find any that were both recent and focused on my intended majors.

Here is the thing, my head is telling me to go one place (ND) and my gut is telling me another (Vandy)

Vanderbilt
I was part of a visitation program and I feel in love with the school. I was completely sure I was going to go to Notre Dame before this program, and considering I was really sick throughout the weekend, I think the fact that I liked it as much as I did says a lot.

Everyone was really friendly and social and I did get to see some of the greek party life (It was St. Patrick’s day). Although it is not really my scene (I love being social but have no interest in drinking) , I did meet a lot of people who were independent and said they were doing just fine.

Their engineering program is pretty wonderful and they have a new building opening up. They also have this modular system where you can try various engineering majors before officially deciding (perfect for someone like me who has no idea what type of engineering I am interested in)

I can double major and graduate in four years (Supposedly). I want to double major in mechanical engineering (for now) and English with a concentration in creative writing.

Advisors are supposedly hit and miss.

The FOOD. It was delicious and there were SO MANY healthy options

They also have a super expansive study abroad program for engineers.

Nashville is pretty cool

The weather is perfect

I already have an awesome potential roommate

Notre Dame
I just came back from a visitation program in ND, and had previously made up my mind to go to Vandy, but now I am extremely torn

Full Disclosure: The weather was unusually bad (the program coordinators apologized often for the weather) so this might have affected my opinion a bit

The campus was also beautiful but it seemed more dreary to me (but again the weather wasn’t cooperating). The basilica was amazing and so was the grotto. (And the library oh my gosh I could die happily there)

I loved the spiritual and service aspects of ND. I am Catholic but not the kind the goes to church regularly. I feel like I could really grow as a person here (and in ways I wouldn’t at Vandy.) We attended one of the dorm masses and it was amazing.

The people in the dorms are very tight knit. They have a really strong community vibe that was really amazing. I could tell that I could easily find a lot of support here during inevitable bouts of homesickness and academic “breakdowns”.

The traditions. Bikes up in trees, senior marshmallow fights in the stands, the “pool Parties” in the reflection pool before football games-> I love these kind of things

For some reason the engineering aspect at ND did not get me as excited as the one at Vandy. I can’t double major but they do have a five year dual degree program that does offer financial aid for the fifth year (I can’t decide how I feel about that, I kinda think it could be a good thing) They don’t have the modular program, which worries me a bit, but I’m sure it is pretty easy to change engineering majors the first year.

From what I gathered, advising is one of the strongest aspects of Notre Dame. I want to do a lot in my undergrad and it seems that I would have a lot of help and support in accomplishing those goals.

The whole sports vibe. I played competitive sports my entire life and absolutely want to play club in college.

Football.

The food was decent. Other kids in the program said the food was amazing but I suppose Vandy just set the bar a little higher (Vandy had fresh smoothies for breakfast…It shouldn’t be a big deal but I can’t get over it haha)

Study abroad was not as expansive (especially for engineering) and it seems that it is more competitive than at Vandy. But they do have the places I am most interested in.

I didn’t get to see much of South Bend, but Vandy wins the location round for me.

Bottom line, I can’t help but be really excited for Vandy. But I feel that I could grow more as a person at Notre Dame. The social scene at Vandy gives me pause, but something about ND doesn’t feel quite right. Although, granted the weather played a part in my initial impression (also there is a lot of preassure/support down here in the south to go to Vandy).

Any outside advice or perspectives would be really helpful. Sorry for the long read but I was also trying to organize my thoughts.

Financial Aid:
They are both affordable for my family but ND is a little more expensive than Vandy as of now. However, ND does accept outside scholarships and uses them to reduce loans and work study FIRST (unlike Vandy). So ND could potentially be cheaper.

I think you have captured the essential character of both schools quite accurately.

Is there a price difference?

The ND network, particularly for engineers, is extremely strong. Research may be easier to participate in at Vandy simply because the smaller number of UG students and better faculty:student ratio. You’ll need that for grad school recommendations.

Vandy is a more balanced school and likely more fun. Club sports are pretty good at both.

Nashville is about the best large city I’ve seen for college. Love the music. South Bend is a bit boring.

ND is going to be better professionally, Vandy personally. You will have a more intimate experience at Vandy. The new engineering building (behind the baseball stadium) is opening this fall. That alone might make it worthwhile to go to Vandy.

If you are planning to go to grad or professional school both are equally good. Your gut is telling you that Vandy is a better fit for you.

The ND campus is anything but dreary. Must have been the weather.

Forbe’s ranks ND as the 5th most powerful Alumni network in the country. ND is also in the top ten nationally for acceptance yield of 54% I believe, without offering merit awards.

The ND housing system where you associate with one residence is terrific. They have their own traditions and mascots even. Every residence has a rector. Not a student but a true professional.

Sports-wise, no comparison. Vandy more fun?? Doubt that.

ND is smaller overall but has more undergrads, which is a plus.

Good luck…

2 Statements caught my eye:

Vandy: “I did get to see some of the greek party life (It was St. Patrick’s day). Although it is not really my scene”

ND: “We attended one of the dorm masses and it was amazing.”

Pick the school that, in your opinion, fits your personality better. ND is lots of fun with many down to earth kids, offers a great education and can be a very spiritual place. If that sounds great to you then grab the opportunity. If you prefer the chance for a great Greek scene, fun off campus activities and a great education- maybe you would prefer Vandy. Pick one and don’t look back! Both great schools.

Congrats on two awesome choices! You had mentioned the weather a couple of times, are you able to visit ND again when the students are outside milling about? We’ve visited twice once in sunny fall weather, and during a dreary snowy wet day–two different vibes. Is better weather important to your psyche?–How important is having a city nearby? Greek life was not a priority for my daughter, actually that gave ND an edge. She likes the work hard play hard mentality thee. Like you she’s Catholic and practices somewhat nominally. However, she also experienced an “amazing Mass” there.

Best wishes on a tough choice–read up on both school newspapers if you haven’t already, and of course their social media pages. Also, we valued Fiske Guide to give us solid reviews of the schools too.

Be aware that Nashville isn’t so far south that winter is a few chilly days in January. They have actual winters there, though there are some weird weather things going on in the world (e.g.,weather at u of Nebraska this winter and early spring was downright Floridian). : B-)

Thank you for all the responses! There is a small price difference between ND and Vandy but not enough to really affect my decision.

I would be fine with either weather (although ND would be a bit of an adjustment) but I mention it mostly because I think it painted the schools in different lights (Vandy seemed happy and fun, while I was trying to hurry to the nearest building at ND) .

I have wondered about the ability to interact closely with professors at ND. The ability to interact with professors was heavily stressed at Vanderbilt but not mentioned oncee during the entire weekend at ND. Although the ability to interact with professors is not a deal breaker for me.

I think I could do well in Greek life, as long as I join a sorority that is not extremely focused on partying, but that is an if. While I do know that I like the social life at ND.

Does anyone know the relative strengths of the engineering and English departments of both schools? I haven’t been able to locate that information.

Thank you again for all your help!

Sorry for double posting but I just wanted to let you all know that I have officially enrolled in the University of Notre Dame!!

Thanks for the responses and Go Irish!!!

congrats @peggy1897

@Peggy1897 Great choice. If you can, read up on Father Theodore Hesburgh. He was President for over 30 years and was a giant figure in Civil Rights and higher education. He held 16 Presidential appointments and died in 2015.

Thank you! @Wien2NC

@OnTheBubble They spoke about him at length during the tours of the campus! He was an amazing man. I will definitely read up on him!

Great choice!

Congratulations on your decision. For my daughter it came down to 3 schools. She was asked if she went to Georgetown could she ever imagine herself sitting in the dorm and wondering what it would be like to be at Notre Dame? The answer was yes. We asked If you were at Notre Dame could you ever dream of sitting in the dorm wondering what it would be like at Georgetown. She answered “no.” Notre Dame was the choice

@Peggy1897 can you share a few of the details that changed your mind, if it’s not too personal? I was enjoying your story and now there’s a huge gap in the storyline that makes me curious.

You’re in for 4 great years!

Congratulations @Peggy1897! Two great choices - you couldn’t go wrong. My D just finished her freshman year at ND and loved it. Go Irish!

@choirsandstages Eek I’ve kind of abandoned CC now that the college process is over, I’m sorry! If you are still curious (and in case anyone else is too) I wish I could say I had a huge epiphany and never looked back but I did worry I had made the wrong choice for a while. There were some things I liked more about Vanderbilt and some things I liked more about Notre Dame. It kind of boiled down to the fact that the things that I liked more about Notre Dame were more important to me. The spiritual/religious aspect of Notre Dame was sort of a pro/con thing for me for a bit because I am kind of at a personal crossroads, and am fairly liberal politically but I ultimately feel like Notre dame would challenge me in this aspect in the best way.

Ultimately it came down to what the schools emphasized. Vandy stressed its stellar academics and campus life, and Notre dame the good their students could do and would be able to do with an ND education. I got a feeling that Notre dame would be a really special experience. So even though Vandy does have Nashville and admittedly much better springs concerts, I feel comfortable I made the right choice.

And I got over the “did-I-make-the-right-choice?” blues a while ago and can proudly report that I’m already giddy planning what residence hall traditions I HAVE to attend (Carroll christmas anyone?) , have invested in plenty of Notre Dame clothing and made my entire family learn the lyrics to the fight song and Alma Mater

I’m quite literally counting down the days
