NOW it's the University of Chicago that is being threated by terrorists !!

I don’t think I’d call someone who harbored such hatred as ‘promising’.

This doesn’t give me a heck of a lot of confidence in the FBI…though maybe I’m being unfair and the threat was only “up” briefly.

“But I thought Chicago had the toughest gun laws in the nation… Oh wait…”

And according to what I read he didn’t have any guns, never mind the guns he said he was going to kill with.

“I don’t think I’d call someone who harbored such hatred as ‘promising’.”

I see people filled with hatred running for President.

Kid was studying electrical engineering so it wasn’t like he was some high school drop out.

Here’s the thing, what if there was actually a real gun incident and lives were lost and the school knew about it beforehand but did nothing. Imagine what would happen to the school :open_mouth:

A high school, Barrington High School, just a short drive from my community, was on lockdown earlier today because of a student that brought a handgun to school. Handgun was unloaded, but student apparently had ammunition with him.

So, two school incidents in one day in Chicago area…

“The FBI was unable to find the threat online”
the kid that posted it took down the post moments later. That’s why the FBI could not find it.

@menloparkmom Thanks! I wondered…

At least the kid had some social media friends with good heads on their shoulders. They called the police.

Wait, the kid didn’t have a gun?
Gee… it almost seems like the gun laws may have just worked after all.

Wow, so it was just an in the moment thing when he had no actual gun or anything else?

I’m so glad social media was in its infancy when I was in high school. I’m sure I could’ve said some spur of the moment, angry things that could’ve come back to haunt me.

Seems like a sad situation all around, not a real threat.

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Anyway you look at it he was full of hate.

So you know that he actually tried to get a gun and was denied or he did not try because of the gun laws? You must know him personally then. You definitely live in your own narrative world.

“But I thought Chicago had the toughest gun laws in the nation…oh wait…” (let me finish) The majority of guns used in Chicago crime come from states with lax regulation like Indiana and Mississippi

Lots of studies on this

huh? A single comment online prompted all this? What if, on the thread about the baby being found, someone posted that they were going to take action against the parents? Would that prompt an FBI response?

(NOTE: Hey NSA/FBI - this is only a discussion forum to understand the issues going on in the college world, so please don’t read my comment and think I am a threat  )

It was a very specific threat, Decide. It wasn’t a general comment.

This is what he posted:

@decidesomehow Do you still think that this guy was just venting???

Yes I do. And the FBI was right to follow up on it, but closing the school was an over reaction. The internet is full of idiots.

Don’t see any reports that LEOs checked to see if he actually was the one who posted those comments or whether someone else somehow gained access to his account to make that post either as a cruel prank or to frame him.

And it wouldn’t be surprising that local LEOs may not have the technical prowess necessary to check for this so quickly/at all considering there were several stories about homeowners having doors busted in and given the third degree by local LEOs before they found much later the homeowner was actually a victim of someone else gaining access to their internet access/accounts:

Report of FB account hacked:

http://motherboard.vice.com/read/government-employees-got-hacked-and-didnt-find-out-until-facebook-told-them

Considering there has been security issues with facebook accounts being hacked remotely before, this shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand unless it’s conclusively ruled out.

@decidesomehow And if he had gone through with his actions I guess you would have egg on your face. Unfortunately a lot of other people would be dead.

I think the school had to do what it did (or some other drastic action). If I were counsel to U of C, I’d tell them that they can’t take the tiny risk that the poster was serious. The university would be shamed all over the world if it didn’t take the warning seriously and someone got hurt.
