Now that my daughter has heard from all of her schools how to make a decision...

@damon30 “I don’t think she meant here on CC”

OP: “I’ve checked this board seeming hour by hour for about 18 months…” and she has visited 1300 times…

She was saying not to interject my opinions about the schools to influence my daughter’s decision. But just to sit back and let her work through it without bias

@Cavitee As I said before, I’m very envious. Hopefully my own parental college adventure turns out this well.

Wow, that’s a great list. For others considering an early admissions track for their kids, are those all early admission? It’s great to have all that news this early in the process.

You can start by crossing off GA and Furman. The rest are all great for business. I would research to see where grads end up working. That should help you narrow it down.

@Mom22039 all of those are early action. She found out from IU (rolling) within a few weeks so that was the first (early October) and last were UVa and UNC on 1/25/19.
Definitely, nice to find out early without a binding decision. (Note:BC is going ED1 and ED2 next year)

@socaldad2002

what’s the reason for being so mean to the OP?

  • maybe the poster uses this place as an outlet for her own stress so she doesn't show it at home? (don't we all do that a bit?)
  • maybe she really values our input (so be nice)?

We don’t know so we should be nice and supportive.

It is really stressful to watch our kids make this decision. The money is unfathomable. The stakes are high. The kids say crazy things. The kids will be on their own and we will know so much less about their lives than we did before. And we parents need to largely back away.

So socaldad, just be nice.

@brooklynlydia ^@socaldad2002 was teasing that given how much op has been on cc, it’s unlikely op would be able to refrain from offering her daughter her opinion. I don’t think he was being mean but making a light hearted poke. I think the ‘shut your mouth’ was perhaps not the best phrase, but in context of the whole post I believe this was meant to be friendly ribbing.

Thanks @2mrmagoo at least someone got my sarcasm

@Cavitee I am sorry thst haven’t responded yet. I hadn’t seen your first post until today for some reason.

I will get back to you today. Glad to hear all the good news!

The numbers.

So rankings.
They measure things directionally. All lead to general buckets for me. The actual numbers are less meaningful.

Tops. Great. Good.

All three you are choosing from are in the “tops” category IMHO.

One thing to remember is some numbers focus on the overall b school. Which can include marketing and accounting. Which are not the Wall Street majors of choice. Those would be seen as finance. Also outside of b schools — Math and engineering are excellent too.

Forbes and Poets and Quants are good. Outcome and alumni input. I they are the best to ask. They actually attended and now are working. Was it worth it. Was it good. Would you tell people to go there essentially.

They rank the list UVA at 2, BC at 9 and UNC at 14.

BC has the highest alumni scores of any school in the rankings.

USNWR which looks more at each concentration together has UNC at 7, UVA at 8 and BC at 21.

However in the important usnwr subset rankings of finance. Bc is #9 and management is #11. Entrepreneurship was #13. Some of the other non finance departments not so high. But these aren’t your areas of interest.

Bloomberg most recent rankings 2017. BC was #3. UVA #5 and UNC #7.

Money 2018. BC #12. UVA and UNC were not ranked. I’ll have to look at methodology.

Wall Street Oasis. Generally considers all three top 20 for bulge bracket banks. IB target and boutique firm target.

According to WSO. None of the three where on the list list of top ten for bulge this year or the schools accounting for 22 percent of recruits. But that shows you no school represents for more 2% or 3% of the annual recruiting class. You can make it from any on your list. UVA and BC where noted as the very next level of a handful of schools.

UNC was mentioned as noteworthy for boutique firms.

All students will be very accomplished. UVA and UNC will obviously have a lot more students for their home state. Which isn’t good or bad.

BC doesn’t break down admissions for the sub school but 78% of all attending where in the top 10 of their class. And school this year has all 50 states and 30 countries. So a bit more regional diversity than you would think. Randomly. My D2022 has a Hispanic roommate from LA, an athlete from Portland Oregon. Just a sample of one. FWIW. a lot of kids from east coast. But there’s a lot of people from east coast in general.

UVA gets high marks for its innovation focus. And BC with the core for all. Which I like for preprofessional students. Also they have opened up minors in Carroll to the other schools so you’ll have an interesting mix. UNC is awesome in many ways too.

So go with your instincts. Each path can lead down the road to success for your student. And congrats to your child and you.

@privatebanker Thanks again for your time and insight! We had a similar thought process and felt she really couldn’t go wrong with her future aspirations and college choices.
She’s wanted to go to UVa since eighth grade and worked to attain that. I often said during the process “if we lived in Richmond you would have wanted to go to UNC.”

Earlier in thread I asked about internships DURING the school year. No responses. From what I’ve seen, this is one of the most underrated variables, especially for business majors.

If the student goes to a college close to significant businesses, the internship possibilities shift from a few brief months in the summer to a year or two, during the summer AND school year. If this is paid, not only does the student earn significant money, he/she also has time to become a valued & experienced member of a team. Many employers want a year or two of experience…imagine graduating with that experience already on your resume.

Depending on what the career goals are, the possibility of school-year internships could be a very persuasive tie-breaker…in this case it’s a real plus for BC, as Boston has an impressive array of businesses–insurance, accounting, mutual funds, etc.

I know UVA is a feeder for DC internships. But a lot on the political and legal front.

Not sure about UNC. But they have the advantage of Duke/NC hoops to enjoy!
