Now, THIS is a bad example of a college list.

i really dont think those papers are very important ECs though
those 20 page essays dont seem a lot especially if they are double spaced
ive seen people write essays in my school that are over 100 page doubled

While it seems like a reach-heavy list, pepero already said there's no point to go to a "safety" school if the school at his/her home country is better (at least to him). It looks to me he/she has a realistic chance for JHU/NYU/Georgetown

Here's an example of a bad list that an extremely cocky friend of mine had (he wanted engineering):

Caltech, MIT.

That's it. He was val, 1560 SAT (old), 500 hrs volunteer, president of 2 clubs, u name it, he's got it.

He only applied to those 2 schools, was rejected by both, and is currently in his CC. Poor guy. I warned him though!

Yeah Caltech/ MIT isn't hedging his bets at all...this kid has NYU plus a whole lot of not that big reaches.

apparently that kid is all SATs and no common sense.

If you have schools in your home country, than the list of US schools is fine, although they are very different, and you would have a very different campus experience at a lot of them.
