I hoping you guys and girls could answer some questions about NROTC. First, Does the Navy issue the scholarships or does the individual college pick the recipients and then tell the Navy who they picked? Second, If I were to not receive a NROTC scholarship can I still do the NROTC Marine Option program and be commisioned as a Second Lt. after college? Finally, Do you know how competitive it is to recieve a scholarship? I am assuming it isn't as tough as getting into the Naval Academy, but is GPA more important than standardized test scores?

i was NROTC Marine option 25 years ago and did check it out for my son. you can go on the web and research it but a couple of comments. You need to be admitted to your college, , you then need to get the scholarship and then you ust be admitted to that college’s unit (which is by far the hardest part if you are trying for the top schools like Cornell, Duke, Notre Dame, etc…)

The Marines won’t be obsessed like the Navy is about math scores (my son had perfect ACT and SAT II math scores) but looking for leadership, athletics, eagle scout, etc… “the whole package”. But still I did talk to the MOI at one of the above schools, he told me they had plenty of scholarships but the kids could not get into the schools (like ND, Duke, Cornell, etc… where you do save about $40K/yr by being in NROTC.

But only do this if you are really interested in the military, a 4 year committment is a long time annd then you have the reserve component.

The Navy decides everything to do with scholarships. The college is separate.

MiPerson80,
How was your experience in the Marines after choosing the NROTC option?
